My articles in the Global Grandmothers' Council Network's Global Grandmothers' Magazine explore how we move from a Culture of War to a Culture of Peace.

Freedom and Frequency: From a Culture of War to a Culture of Peace

Freedom is not merely the absence of chains. It is the presence of choice, dignity, creativity, and belonging.

If we truly desire a peaceful world, we must ask ourselves an uncomfortable question:

What creates war in the first place?

Wars do not begin on battlefields. They begin in human hearts and minds. They begin when fear is amplified, when separation is encouraged, and when people are taught to see one another as enemies rather than neighbors.

If conflict can spread through human consciousness, perhaps peace can spread the same way. History suggests that it can.

Long before governments sign treaties, culture changes. Music changes. Stories change. Communities change. Human beings begin imagining a different future.

Think about the role music has played throughout history-from the spirituals sung by enslaved people in the American South to the freedom songs that strengthened the Civil Rights Movement. Protest songs have challenged injustice and inspired movements for peace. National anthems unite entire populations. Religious chants, Indigenous drumming, gospel choirs, and sacred ceremonies have sustained communities through centuries of hardship.
