How She Learned How To Rest In The Middle Of Growth

By Frances Dupree

Growth is often romanticized as constant motion.

We celebrate the launch, the promotion, the expansion, the scaling. We applaud the woman who does it all — builds the vision, leads the team, supports the family, and still finds time to plan the next big move. I used to believe that if I slowed down, even briefly, I would lose momentum.

What I’ve learned is this: growth without rest is not sustainable. It’s survival.

For a long time, I equated rest with falling behind. Pausing felt dangerous. I told myself I would rest “after this season” — after the deadline, after the milestone, after things settled down. But growth seasons rarely settle on their own. They stretch you. They demand more. And if you’re not careful, they consume you.

My turning point wasn’t dramatic. There was no burnout headline or public collapse. It was quieter than that. I began noticing that my clarity was fading. I was productive, but not precise. Busy, but not deeply aligned. I was moving forward, but I wasn’t always sure I was moving in the right direction.

So I experimented with something radical for someone like me: intentional rest.

Not quitting. Not shrinking. Not abandoning ambition.

Rest.

I started protecting small pockets of space — mornings without immediate emails, evenings without strategy sessions, weekends without constant optimization. I limited my daily priorities instead of overwhelming myself with endless to-do lists. I replaced urgency with intention.

And something unexpected happened.

My decisions improved.

When I allowed myself to pause, I could hear my own thoughts again. I became more discerning about which opportunities aligned with my long-term vision and which were simply distractions dressed up as advancement. I stopped saying yes out of fear and started saying yes from clarity.

Rest didn’t slow my growth. It refined it.

It strengthened my leadership. It deepened my creativity. It gave me stamina. I realized that momentum is not about constant acceleration — it’s about sustainable movement. Even athletes understand that muscle builds during recovery, not just during strain. Why should leadership be any different?

As women, especially ambitious women, we are often praised for endurance. We are celebrated for how much we can carry. But there is power in modeling a different narrative — one where discipline includes recovery, where excellence includes boundaries, where ambition coexists with well-being.

Rest is not a reward you earn after exhaustion. It is a strategy.

It is how you protect your clarity.

It is how you sustain your influence.

It is how you grow without losing yourself in the process.

Today, my growth looks different. It is more intentional. More aligned. More resilient. I still move forward — boldly and strategically — but I no longer confuse motion with meaning.

Learning to rest in the middle of growth didn’t make me less ambitious.

It made me unstoppable in a way that lasts.
