I Never Wrote a Book to Win an Award

The Award Was Never the Goal. The Impact Was.

When I sat down to write 3 Silent Relationship Destroyers, I wasn't thinking about awards.

I wasn't imagining red carpets, recognition, or international honors.

I was thinking about people.

I was thinking about marriages that were slowly falling apart, teams that had stopped trusting one another, leaders who felt exhausted, and workplaces where conflict had become the norm. I wanted to understand why good people, with good intentions, often struggled to build healthy relationships.

The AAE Framework

That journey led me to what I now call the AAE Framework: Attitudes, Assumptions, and Expectations.

These three invisible forces quietly shape every conversation, every decision, and every relationship we have. They determine how we interpret situations, how we respond to conflict, and ultimately, the culture we create around us.

The Real Reward

Receiving the International Impact Book Award in the category of Conflict Management, Culture & Society was an incredible honor. But for me, the award simply affirmed that this message matters.

The most rewarding moments have never come from recognition.

They have come from watching leaders pause long enough to look inward.

I have watched executives realize that they were unintentionally creating fear instead of trust. I have seen school leaders recognize that the culture they wanted for their staff first had to exist within themselves. I have worked with leaders responsible for hundreds of people who made intentional changes after examining their own attitudes, assumptions, and expectations.

As they became more regulated, their organizations became healthier. Communication improved. Trust increased. People felt seen, valued, and heard.

That is the real reward.

Culture Does Not Begin With Strategy. It Begins With the Leader.

One lesson has become impossible for me to ignore.

Culture does not begin with strategy. It begins with the leader.

We spend enormous amounts of time trying to fix processes, policies, and people. Yet we often overlook the one thing we have complete control over: ourselves.

Your internal state becomes your team's environment.

If you show up with curiosity instead of assumptions, your team notices.

If you regulate your attitude during difficult moments, your team feels it.

If you create clarity around expectations instead of leaving people to guess, trust begins to grow.

Leadership is far less about authority than it is about influence. Influence begins long before we ever speak. It begins with how we choose to show up.

Three Simple Questions

My hope is not simply that more people read my book.

My hope is that more leaders begin asking themselves three simple questions before every difficult conversation:

  • What attitude am I bringing?
  • What assumptions am I making?
  • Have I created clear expectations?

Those questions have the power to transform relationships, organizations, and communities.

The award sits on a shelf.

The mission continues every day.

Because when leaders regulate themselves, cultures begin to heal.

And when culture changes, everything changes.
