From Desperation to Dignity: Empowering Women Through Faith, Compassion, and Vocational Opportunity
What a joy and honor to be a part of Influential Woman! Each of you women is an inspirational example of dedication, resilience, and faith. You serve as beacons of hope, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to your passions. For some of us, it is in seemingly impossible situations that have tested our resolve, pushing us to the limits of our endurance. For others, it is in moments of extreme hardship that an unyielding determination emerges, empowering us to rise above our circumstances.
A Connection Born from Desperation
I had an encounter with a young Ugandan man approximately four years ago who reached out to me in desperation, seeking assistance for a child on the brink of death at his struggling orphanage. Initially, I was skeptical and reluctant to engage, dismissing his pleas as a potential scam. However, his gracious demeanor and persistent yet respectful appeals for prayer eventually won me over.
Over the months that followed, a sense of spiritual solidarity developed between us, forming a very strong bond. Now, more than four years later, I consider this young man, Ian Kakembo, my godson. His wife, Nagawa, came into the picture later after seeking refuge from an abusive uncle. Ian took her in as a worker to help pay for her room and board. She worked tirelessly, caring for the children, cooking, and cleaning. Eventually, love blossomed, and she became Ian's beautiful wife and the mother of their daughter, as well as a loving caregiver to the 33 beautiful children at the orphanage.
I have enjoyed several trips to the orphanage and am always overwhelmed by the enormous love and joy these children share.
I've written about our story in my book, Kakembo: A Heart Connection (available on Amazon). The book includes numerous color photographs documenting our harrowing adventures during those early years.
Through the support of wonderful donors, my husband and I have been able to build a beautiful orphanage in Uganda. Currently, we also serve impoverished communities in Bangladesh and Pakistan through our nonprofit charity, RDM.
Working Conditions in Pakistan's Brick Kilns
In the past two years, we have also been led to help in another seemingly impossible situation. Working conditions in Pakistan's brick kilns are notoriously harsh, characterized by modern-day slavery and debt bondage. Workers live in small shacks near the kilns. They mold bricks by hand from clay and bake them in dangerous fire ovens. If they fail to meet their production quotas, it is not uncommon for them to be assaulted or starved by the kiln owners.
Sometimes the owners even kidnap the daughters of kiln workers, selling them into the sex trade. Entire families work from dawn to dusk under severe physical and financial exploitation, trying to repay generational debts burdened by extremely high interest rates. They are continually exposed to heavy black smoke, toxic fumes, and extreme heat.
Women Rising to New Heights
At RDM, we desire to help the women of Pakistan rise above the extreme hardships they face. Confronted with these seemingly impossible circumstances, we are partnering with an influential young man named Nabeel, who has been passionately seeking solutions to poverty.
What began with the gift of a few simple sewing machines has grown into a vocational training program for both Muslim and Christian women in this village. We are still in the early stages, but we are deeply encouraged to watch these women rise to new heights with the opportunities they have been given. Many had no means of earning a living outside of assisting their husbands in the brutal work of the brick kilns.
These humble yet determined women began by learning hand stitching and pattern-making techniques while waiting for the sewing machines to arrive. They then learned the complexities of operating the machines. Developing these skills required time, diligence, and consistent practice. The women met weekly, encouraging one another to persevere as they worked toward mastering a respected and valuable craft.
These ladies are truly amazing. Transforming a flat piece of fabric into a three-dimensional garment requires remarkable skill and understanding. It is even more challenging to tailor clothing to fit a specific person for a specific purpose. Every piece must be carefully measured, cut, and sewn so that it fits perfectly.
We recently honored these women with a community celebration. Each received a certificate of completion for the sewing course and proudly showcased a beautiful garment she had created to the applause of the community. The ceremony brought dignity, confidence, and a tremendous sense of pride to the women and their families.
Beautiful Works of Artistry
As women, we can allow the difficult experiences of our lives to be woven into a greater purpose. A beautifully embroidered piece of cloth often appears chaotic when viewed from the underside. But when seen from the top, it reveals an intricate design filled with blended colors, beautiful textures, and purposeful patterns. So often, we see our lives only from underneath, where all the hardships and trials reside. Yet through diligence, faith, and encouraging one another, we begin to see that our lives are becoming beautiful works of artistry, rich with color, texture, and meaning.
Through our experiences and a broader perspective, we can inspire other women to rise above their own trials.
Let us never be afraid to place a caring hand on the shoulder of a woman who is struggling. Let us continue to reach out, offering encouragement and a forward-looking vision for overcoming life's challenges. Our example and our encouragement may become the very seed that plants a dream in another woman's heart and gives her the hope to rise above what once seemed impossible.
