Influence Is Built Before the Meeting
The strongest voices in the room are often shaped by preparation, relationships, and trust long before anyone speaks.
A lot of people think influence happens in the meeting.
It usually does not.
The meeting is where influence becomes visible. But the real work often happens before anyone opens the agenda.
Influence is built through preparation, consistency, trust, and relationships. It is built when you learn the business well enough to understand what people are trying to solve. It is built when you listen before you recommend. It is built when you follow through, tell the truth, and bring solutions instead of just opinions with better packaging.
For women, especially in industries where we are still underrepresented, influence matters. We may not always be the loudest voice in the room, the longest-tenured person at the table, or the person others expected to challenge the conversation. But we can still be prepared. We can still be clear. We can still bring insight that moves the work forward.
Influence is not about being forceful. It is about being useful, trusted, and courageous.
It is asking the question no one else is asking. It is naming the risks the team needs to see. It is connecting people who should be solving the problem together. It is helping turn complexity into action.
The goal is not to take up space just to prove we belong there. The goal is to use our space with purpose.
So build the relationships. Learn the business. Prepare your perspective. Find your mentors and sponsors. And when the moment comes, speak with clarity.
Because influence is not about being the loudest person in the room.
It is about being someone the room learns to listen to.
