It Was More Than Handing Out Invitations
When I agreed to begin offering basic Medicare education meetings in my community, I expected to spend my time handing out invitations.
Instead, I found myself listening.
Recently, I had the opportunity to sit inside a convenience store in Paris, Tennessee, where the owner graciously allowed me to greet customers and share invitations to upcoming Medicare education meetings. Because customers came inside to pay for fuel and other purchases, many naturally paused long enough to ask what the meetings were about.
What surprised me wasn't the number of invitations I handed out.
It was the number of conversations.
Some people smiled and continued with their day. Some were visiting from out of town. Others stopped with genuine curiosity, wanting to know what Medicare education involved. That was enough for me. My goal was never to pressure anyone. It was simply to let people know that free educational opportunities are available whenever they're ready.
One conversation, in particular, has stayed with me.
A gentleman who was already enrolled in Medicare began sharing his family's story. He talked about his daughter, who had recently lost her job; her husband, who was living with a disability; and the challenges they were facing without health insurance. We also discussed the importance of planning ahead with life insurance. More than anything, he needed someone willing to listen.
He even came back a second time to continue our conversation.
Sometimes the greatest service we can provide isn't having all the answers.
Sometimes it's taking the time to hear someone's story.
Another woman paused and simply said, "I'm glad you're doing this. It was a mess when I got into Medicare."
She didn't elaborate, but her words stayed with me.
Over the past few months, I've immersed myself in Medicare education. One lesson continues to stand out: many people are trying to make important decisions without fully understanding the questions they should be asking.
- Questions about when to enroll.
- Questions about how their current coverage works with Medicare.
- Questions about enrollment timelines.
- Questions about avoiding costly mistakes.
As a former special education teacher, I've always believed that education begins with understanding where someone is before helping them move forward. That philosophy hasn't changed. It simply applies to a different stage of life.
My role is not to pressure people into making decisions. It is to encourage thoughtful questions, provide basic educational information, and help people feel more prepared for conversations about Medicare.
The more people I meet, the more convinced I become that listening is one of the most valuable forms of education.
Sometimes an invitation opens the door to a conversation.
And sometimes a conversation reminds us why education matters.
