My Grandparents
Cherished Memories of Love, Food, and Quality Time with My Grandparents
I am here, hurt, unable to walk without a cane, and in a lot of pain. It made me think of my deceased grandparents.
I know my Gpa, who is now deceased, fed me lots and lots of popsicles and freeze pops as a kid, and I loved them. I especially loved the ones with the ice cream in them.
I got to try all the flavors.
It was part of my bonding with my Gpa. When I would visit, he also fed me unlimited Twinkies, chocolate and vanilla Zingers, and Suzy Qs. I have bought myself some Suzy Qs and have some Twinkies coming, remembering how he fed them to me and how I could eat all I wanted of all their food, especially the popsicles.
I was a very skinny, hungry kid who loved to eat.
I loved my Gpa. I also ate Swiss Cake Rolls and Little Debbie brownies. Yes, I was allowed to eat all I wanted.
My Gma would make a good dinner of ham with pineapple and cherries, brown sugar, and butter. Then, the next day, we would make ham sandwiches on toast or bread with mayo, mustard, and cheese. She would also cook ham and beans from the ham. She got a huge ham and did that every time we came.
My Gpa would make homemade cornbread and so many healthy sides. We would wake up early in the morning, and I loved helping my grandma make pancakes and eggs, hash browns, bacon and biscuits, milk gravy, sausage and tomatoes, toast, and more for Sunday breakfast before we got ready to go to church.
For breakfast on other days, I would have what my Gpa bought me, which was Frosted Flakes cereal. I ate all of it I wanted with bananas and raisins. I also ate Rice Krispies cereal and really poured in the sugar.
He would also treat us to the Waffle House, where he bought me blueberry pancakes with whipped butter and blueberry syrup, chocolate milk, and coffee.
We ate lots of tomatoes, apples, and oranges. There were also lemons, and I would eat those, too.
My grandparents also had miniature frosted and chocolate donuts, toast, and my Gma's homemade jam.
I was taught how to cook and clean up on my visits there with my parents. I thought it was fun. I would help them wash the dishes, start the dishwasher, and help empty it, all in happy cheer and well-fed.
I loved my grandparents. We would go to the play area at the gorgeous Columbus, Indiana, mall, with a cannonball structure that I loved to watch and adore at the mall, and the fashion shop where I got reasonable clothes and Liz Claiborne purses with money I brought from my allowance from doing work and chores.
I bought the clothes and purses all on sale, and I had fun at the roller rink.
They were really good times. I love and miss my grandparents and cannot wait to see them in heaven.
I just loved trying to crochet at my Gma's. I loved her sewing room and trying to make my Barbie's clothes, but I had to be really careful of the needles on the floor getting in my foot. Ouch!! I had to learn to use her thimble, too.
I used her sewing machines but just knew the basics and made pillows for my Barbies and dolls.
In my grandparents' first townhome in Columbus, Indiana, I loved making paper money out of sheets of paper, a pen, and scissors with my cousins, and I loved playing store. I also made Chinese fortunes and letters and learned to fold my letters really cool.
It kept us occupied for hours—really, all day until the evening. They were amazing grandparents.
My grandma would play all sorts of fun, educational, intellectual board games with us all and do crossword puzzles and word finds with me. She would read me the newspaper and pull out her Bible and books and teach me how to study and read Christian literature.
My grandparents really spent time with me. Now they are in heaven. I will see them there.
I loved how they did not just sit me in front of the TV. 🙏😊♥️
