Rebuilding Trust One Conversation at a Time

By Susan Lyn Sykes

Trust is fragile.

It can take years to build and only moments to lose.

Recently, I watched videos online that questioned whether product labels accurately matched what consumers actually received. Whether those specific claims are ultimately proven true or not, the public reaction reminded me of something I see every day in my profession.

When people hear about one bad experience, they often assume everyone operates the same way.

In Medicare and insurance, that assumption can be heartbreaking.

Many people approach these conversations with fear because they've heard stories about high-pressure sales tactics or recommendations that benefited an agent more than the client. Those stories make it harder for professionals who genuinely want to educate and serve.

After spending more than three decades as a special education teacher, I entered the Medicare field with the same philosophy I carried into the classroom: Every person deserves patience, respect, and clear explanations.

  • Education should come before decisions.
  • People should never feel rushed.
  • Questions should always be welcomed.

I can't control what others choose to do, but I can control how I treat every person who asks for my help.

If someone walks away from one of my Medicare education meetings feeling more confident, more informed, and more comfortable asking questions, then I've accomplished something meaningful.

Trust is not something we ask people to give us. It is something we earn through honesty, consistency, and service.

In a world where trust is often questioned, I hope to be someone people can count on.
