For a long time, I believed success was tied solely to achievement—the title, the promotion, the recognition, or reaching the next milestone. While those things matter, I have learned that real success is rooted in impact: how you serve others, how you lead through challenges, and how you use your experiences to create opportunities for people who may not have had access otherwise.
As a Financial Empowerment Counselor, I have the privilege of working closely with individuals and families navigating some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. I have seen firsthand how financial instability affects nearly every aspect of a person’s well-being—housing, mental health, confidence, relationships, and even the ability to dream beyond survival.
(It can also make you avoid checking your banking app like it is a jump scare.)
What I have also witnessed is resilience. People are capable of extraordinary transformation when they are given support, education, and someone willing to believe in their potential.
That perspective has shaped the way I approach leadership.
Leadership is not about having all the answers or being the loudest voice in the room. It is about showing up consistently, creating space for others, and being willing to advocate for change—even when it feels uncomfortable.
Some of the most meaningful growth in my career has come from stepping into rooms where I felt uncertain but choosing to contribute anyway—even when, internally, I was thinking, “Okay… don’t trip over your words, De’Andra.”
Women—especially women in leadership and service-oriented roles—often carry the pressure of proving themselves repeatedly. We are expected to lead with confidence while balancing professionalism, empathy, ambition, and resilience all at once—essentially being a strategist, therapist, motivator, and miracle worker before lunch.
I have learned that one of the most powerful things we can do is stop shrinking ourselves to fit into spaces that were never designed with us in mind.
Instead, we must own our expertise, trust our voices, and recognize that our lived experiences hold value. The work we do, the barriers we overcome, and the perspectives we bring are not weaknesses—they are assets.
One lesson that continues to guide me is that visibility matters.
Opportunities often come from simply being willing to raise your hand, speak up, apply anyway, or say yes before you feel fully ready.
Growth rarely arrives at the perfect time. Sometimes, the next level of your life requires you to move forward before your confidence catches up.
And sometimes, it looks like updating your LinkedIn profile with one hand while questioning every life decision with the other.
I also believe deeply in the importance of community.
None of us succeeds entirely on our own. Mentorship, collaboration, and supportive networks can change the trajectory of a career—and a life.
That is why spaces that uplift and amplify women’s voices are so important. When women share knowledge openly, we create pathways for others to rise alongside us.
My journey is still evolving, but one thing remains constant: I want the work I do to leave people better than I found them.
Whether through financial counseling, advocacy, leadership, or community engagement, my goal is to help create systems and spaces where people feel seen, supported, and empowered to thrive.
Success is no longer just about what I accomplish personally.
It is about the impact I leave behind and the doors I help open for others—preferably while reminding women everywhere that they do not have to have everything figured out to be powerful.
