Scholastics Fun Fair Time
How a Teacher's Kindness and Love of Reading Shaped My Journey to Becoming an Author
Well, when my granddaughter was excitedly showing me her brand-new Dolly Parton fundraiser books, I had a good memory and asked my son-in-law, her father, if he remembered Scholastic books from school.
He did.
I just loved Scholastic books. The brand-new books gave me such a good feeling and sparked my imagination. I used to use my allowance to buy some.
But one day, they had a Scholastic book fair at school when I was in third grade, and I didn’t have any money for books. My sweet third-grade teacher used her own money, called me to her desk, said she didn’t do that for just anyone, and bought me a book about cats and gave it to me.
I loved it!
Then my mom called my GMA when I came home crying because I didn’t have money for books. She found out the fair was still going on, and my GMA gave my mom money for me to use at the book fair. I went to the book fair with my dad and got some great books. I remember a Furby book was one of my favorites.
Later, in my twenties, I was listening to the US 99 country station when my third-grade teacher—the one who bought me the book—won the Teacher of the Year award. She was my favorite teacher.
She had me making my own books, which I called “Jenny Books,” for the class to read during their free time. And now, here I am, an author writing online for donations.
