From Proving Myself to Leading Others: How a Woman in Law Enforcement Built a Legacy Beyond the Badge

She didn't Wait for Permission - She Built Her Own Seat at the Table

Over my 28-year career with the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), I learned what it means to lead in spaces where women had already begun breaking barriers—and where I was still often underestimated, outnumbered, and expected to prove myself before I ever began.

I entered law enforcement knowing it would be challenging. What I didn’t fully understand at the time was how often I would be tested—not just on my skill, but on my right to belong.

Because being a woman in that environment didn’t just mean doing the job.

It meant constantly proving I deserved to be there.

Early in my career, I learned something quickly:

People would doubt me before they ever saw me work.

Not because I lacked training.

Not because I lacked discipline.

But because I was a woman.

And in specialized assignments, that doubt didn’t fade—it intensified.

I made a decision that would ultimately define my career.

I stepped into covert mobile surveillance—one of the most demanding and male-dominated disciplines within law enforcement.

It was a world where precision mattered.

Where trust was critical.

Where communication and coordination could determine the success or failure of an entire operation.

And yet, despite the stakes, I often found myself having to prove my capabilities again and again.

There were moments when I was underestimated before I even spoke.

Moments when my training and expertise were questioned.

Moments when it would have been easier to step back than step forward.

But I didn’t.

Because I knew something I refused to let go of:

I belonged there.

So I committed to the work.

I prepared relentlessly.

I focused on the details others overlooked.

I stayed consistent, even when it felt like no one was paying attention.

Not to prove others wrong—

but to prove to myself that I was exactly where I was meant to be.

Over time, things began to shift.

The same environment that once questioned me began to trust me.

The same space that felt closed began to open.

I went on to become one of only two designated Subject Matter Experts in surveillance within the LAPD—a role I held for over 16 years. I also served as a California POST-certified instructor, training personnel at the local, state, and federal levels and helping refine best practices in covert surveillance across the country.

I didn’t just succeed in that space.

I helped elevate it.

For more than a decade, I led my own surveillance squad—mentoring and developing supervisors, both men and women, in high-risk, high-pressure environments.

Because leadership, I learned, isn’t about continuing to prove yourself.

It’s about ensuring others no longer feel like they have to.

In 2014, while still serving, my partner and I took another leap.

We founded Vigilare, LLC with a clear mission: to elevate surveillance standards beyond traditional law enforcement and bring real-world, field-tested training to a broader audience. Through Vigilare, we have trained law enforcement professionals and organized retail crime investigators across the country—equipping them with the skills to gather actionable intelligence, operate safely, and build strong, prosecutable cases.

But as we worked with teams in the field, we saw a consistent gap.

Even the most skilled surveillance teams struggled if they weren’t aligned—if they weren’t truly communicating, operating on the same page, and speaking the same language.

And we realized something important:

Training alone wasn’t enough.

In 2024, we expanded that mission by launching Vigilare Connect, LLC in strategic partnership with Motorola.

Our goal was simple: to provide mission-critical communication systems that support the very principles we teach—clarity, coordination, and operational effectiveness.

Because in surveillance—and in leadership—success depends on more than individual skill.

It depends on how well a team functions together.

When I retired from the LAPD in 2022, I stepped away from the badge—but not from the mission.

If anything, that mission became even clearer.

Here’s what my journey has taught me:

You will be doubted.

You will be underestimated.

You will walk into rooms where you are the only one.

And there will be moments when even you question yourself.

But those moments are not barriers.

They are invitations.

You don’t need permission to take up space.

You don’t need validation to lead.

You don’t need to wait until everyone believes in you.

Because if you do, you may never begin.

Instead, decide.

Decide that your work will speak for you.

Decide that your presence is earned.

Decide that even when it’s uncomfortable, you will move forward anyway.

Because influence isn’t built by waiting.

It’s built by showing up—consistently, courageously, and without apology.

And one day, someone will walk into a room they once thought they didn’t belong in—

And they’ll stay.

Because they saw someone like you do it first.

You don’t need permission.

You never did.
