Starting Over at 49; Why I Refuse to Believe I’m Too Late

I Am Not Behind: I Am Becoming

There was a time when I thought I would have everything figured out by this age.

Career. Family. Finances. Relationships. Purpose.

You grow up believing life follows some invisible timeline: build your career, raise your children, establish yourself, create financial security, and eventually reach the point where everything finally feels settled.

Then life happens.

Suddenly, the timeline you carefully imagined doesn't look anything like the life you're actually living.

At 49, I could look at everything that didn't happen according to plan and convince myself that I'm behind.

But I refuse to do that.

Because I'm beginning to understand that starting over doesn't mean starting from nothing.

I'm starting with experience.

I'm starting with wisdom.

I'm starting with lessons I paid for through mistakes, heartbreak, disappointment, victories, motherhood, career changes, unexpected circumstances, and simply living long enough to understand myself in a different way.

I Am Not Behind

Comparison can make a woman question an otherwise beautiful journey.

Someone else bought the house.

Someone else celebrated the anniversary.

Someone else's business took off.

Someone else seems financially secure.

Someone else appears to have figured out the very thing you're still trying to understand.

But I've learned that constantly measuring my life against someone else's timeline only distracts me from what I'm meant to build with mine.

Her chapter ten doesn't make my chapter three a failure.

We aren't late because our lives unfolded differently.

We're living.

And living rarely happens according to schedule.

Reinvention Doesn't Belong Only to the Young

There is something society sometimes gets wrong about women and age.

We're encouraged to dream when we're young.

But what happens when you're 40, 48, 55, 60, or 70 and realize there is still something inside of you waiting to be created?

I say you create it.

Write the book.

Start the business.

Apply for the opportunity.

Change careers.

Take the trip.

Go back to school.

Fall in love again.

Learn something completely new.

Walk into rooms you've never entered before.

And if you have to begin again, begin again.

Your age isn't evidence that you've missed your opportunity.

It's evidence that you've accumulated something valuable to bring with you.

I'm Still Becoming

At 49, I'm an author.

I'm building a vision for Freedom Haven.

I'm discovering new opportunities to speak and advocate.

I'm exploring dreams that didn't exist for me ten years ago.

And perhaps most importantly, I'm getting to know this version of Tangi.

She's different.

Some of that difference came through beautiful experiences.

Some came through painful ones.

But all of it belongs to my story.

I no longer want to spend so much time mourning who I used to be that I fail to appreciate the woman I'm becoming.

You Are Allowed to Want More

Women can spend so much of their lives taking care of everyone else that wanting something for themselves begins to feel selfish.

It isn't.

You are allowed to have dreams after raising children.

You are allowed to reinvent yourself after divorce.

You are allowed to want companionship after heartbreak.

You are allowed to pursue success after failure.

You are allowed to create something new after losing something you thought would last forever.

And you are allowed to change your mind about what you want your life to look like.

Growth sometimes requires giving yourself permission to become someone you couldn't have imagined when you were younger.

Maybe This Isn't Starting Over

I've been thinking about that phrase lately: starting over.

Maybe that's not actually what I'm doing.

Starting over sounds like everything before this moment disappeared.

It didn't.

I'm carrying every lesson with me.

Every mistake taught me something.

Every closed door redirected me.

Every accomplishment showed me what's possible.

Every difficult season revealed something about my strength.

And every dream I'm pursuing now is being pursued by a woman who knows herself better than the younger version of me ever could.

So maybe I'm not starting over at 49.

Maybe I'm starting from experience.

And there is a difference.

My Timeline Is Still Being Written

I don't know exactly what the next decade will bring.

But I know what I'm no longer willing to believe.

I'm not too old.

I'm not too late.

I haven't missed every opportunity meant for me.

And my most meaningful work doesn't have to be behind me.

There are books I haven't written.

People I haven't met.

Rooms I haven't walked into.

Ideas I haven't built.

Places I haven't traveled.

Love I haven't experienced.

And lives I haven't had the opportunity to impact yet.

So I'm not going to spend this chapter looking backward and wishing I had arrived sooner.

I'm going to build.

I'm going to create.

I'm going to live.

And I'm going to give myself permission to become everything this season of my life is calling me to become.

At 49, I'm not running out of time.

I'm finally learning that my life doesn't have to happen according to anyone else's clock.
