Stepping Into Trust: How One Opportunity Transformed My Career
From Single Parent to HR Leader: How One Woman Built Resilience Through Trust and Determination
I did not begin my career with a roadmap. What I had was the determination of a single parent who needed a full-time job to take care of my daughter, and the drive to build something stable, meaningful, and lasting for both of us. What I did not know then was that a single moment of trust would become the turning point that shaped the woman and professional I am today.
My journey started in payroll, a role that demanded precision, confidentiality, and consistency. As I took on the responsibility, I saw it as more than just an opportunity to advance. I saw it as a responsibility I needed to honor. That trust opened a door I never expected. Payroll led to recruitment, and recruitment led to something even more defining: a path into employee relations.
At the same time, I was carrying the weight of finishing my degree while working full time. It was a season of long nights, early mornings, and a constant balancing act between ambition, motherhood, and exhaustion. Even when it seemed I had reached my breaking point, I persisted.
In 2014, my father passed away. It was a loss that shook me deeply, but I did not step away from school. I was on a mission to finish my AA degree, and grief only sharpened that determination. Continuing was not easy, but it felt necessary—a way to honor him, and a way to honor the promise I had made to myself.
Then came the moment that changed everything.
Someone saw something in me—not just my work ethic, but my potential. They recognized a talent I had not fully claimed yet. They believed I belonged in employee relations, and that belief became the catalyst for the career I have built since 2014. Being seen in that way not only altered my path but also broadened my understanding of what was possible.
But life has a way of testing even the strongest momentum. When the pandemic hit in 2020, the world became overwhelming. The pressure, the uncertainty, the emotional weight—it all collided at once. For the first time, I had to pause school. It was not a failure; it was survival. It was choosing to breathe in a moment when everything felt heavy.
When the world slowly steadied, I took inventory of where I stood. I realized I had seven classes left to finish my BS degree. Seven. After everything I had pushed through—working full time, grieving, raising my daughter, navigating a global crisis—I knew I could not stop there. I had to finish. I wanted to make my parents proud. I wanted to make myself proud. And I wanted to show my daughter what perseverance looks like.
Looking back, I understand now that my story is not just about career progression. It is about trust—trusting what others see in us, and the trust we learn to place in ourselves. It is about stepping into opportunities before we feel ready. It is about carrying ambition through seasons of loss, pressure, and uncertainty. It is about discovering that resilience is not something you are born with; it is something you build.
If there is one message I want other women to take from my journey, it is this: the right opportunity does not always arrive when life is calm. Sometimes it shows up in the middle of chaos, when you are stretched thin and questioning everything. Take it anyway. Growth often begins in the moments that feel the most overwhelming.
Being seen changed my life, but choosing to rise to the moment is what reshaped my future. I stepped into responsibility before I felt fully prepared, and that decision opened a path I never expected to walk.
Today, I carry my story with pride. And I hope it reminds other women that even when the journey feels heavy, the next step might be the one that changes everything.
