October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to education, remembrance, and hope. Since the movement began in the early 1980s, it has united millions around the world to increase awareness, promote early detection, and support life-saving research. Today, approximately one in eight women will face a breast cancer diagnosis in her lifetime. Behind every statistic is a story of courage, perseverance, and love. These stories remind us of the power of community and the importance of coming together in support of one another.
At Influential Women, we believe that storytelling connects and heals. This month, we invited members of our community to share their experiences and reflections. Whether they have walked through their own diagnosis, supported a loved one, or simply want to raise awareness, their words shine as a tribute to strength in all its forms.
“I have the BRCA gene.”
“I’m so grateful that testing can identify it easily. I started mammograms at 25 and have already had two biopsies for several masses. So far, all have been clear, but it’s something I wouldn’t wish on anyone. Please, get the genetic testing. It can make all the difference.” - Chantel 🍄 Hirschel, Director of Revenue Operations at Sana Benefits
“Beyond her professional accomplishments, Jaclyn is a survivor.”
“After my own breast cancer diagnosis, I became a mentor with ABCD: After Breast Cancer Diagnosis and the Young Survival Coalition. I now offer peer support to others navigating this journey. I’ve participated in awareness campaigns and media outreach because I believe no one should ever face a diagnosis alone.” - Jaclyn Dillon, Commercial Lines Lead/Senior Account Executive at Patriot Growth Insurance Services
“We walked for Lucille.”
“I joined Team CPV PINK for the Susan G. Komen ‘Walk Where You Are’ event at the Morton Arboretum in Lisle, Illinois. This year, we dedicated our walk to Lucille Manijak, who passed away in 2002 after her battle with breast cancer. Our team included friends and family, generations walking side by side in her honor. It was a reminder that love and friendship endure long after loss.” - Karen Dziekan, MBA, National Account Manager at Chicago Pneumatic
“There is hope.”
“I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020. Through it all, I learned the importance of being true to yourself, asking questions, and standing firm in what you believe. There is always hope. Resilience in hard times becomes a source of pride and strength.” - Dr. Sharon Cuba Rodriguez, School Social Worker at EOSD
“To every woman affected by breast cancer…”
“Remember that your diagnosis does not define you. You are strength in motion, faith that blossoms, and love that endures. Healing is not just physical, it is spiritual. Together, we rise stronger, one heartbeat of hope at a time.” - Gertrude Danso Kumi, Senior Personal Banker at PNC
“Do not be afraid to get checked.”
“I’ve been blessed not to experience breast cancer personally, but I can’t stress enough the importance of regular screenings. If something feels off, get it checked. Early detection saves lives. We care about you, and your health matters.” - Kelley Stout, Senior Designer at Hayden Interiors
Together, We Rise
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is more than a campaign. It is a collective promise to stand with those affected, to celebrate survivors, and to honor the memories of those we’ve lost. To every woman facing breast cancer, and to every friend, family member, and caregiver who walks beside her, your strength inspires us all.
At Influential Women, we are reminded that the power of community lies in shared compassion. Whether through stories, mentorship, or simple acts of kindness, we lift each other higher. This October, and every day, may we continue to lead with courage, empathy, and unity.
