Refusing the Script: Building a Life on My Own Terms
Society loves a good script. We are naturally drawn to neat categories and predictable paths because they make the world easier to understand. But for those of us who cross borders, disciplines, and cultures, living a pre-written narrative is rarely an option.
The Weight of Early Expectations
From a young age, the expectations placed on us can be heavy. Growing up in Iran, the definition of success was clearly mapped out: you became an engineer or a doctor. Anything else was viewed as a risk not worth taking.
Guided by that cultural current, I worked hard, passed the entrance exams, and enrolled in engineering. But I quickly realized that succeeding at someone else's dream is just another form of failure.
Leaving that program to start over and pursue the social sciences was the first time I truly stepped off the script. To many, it looked like a mistake. To me, it was an awakening. It was the moment I learned that taking ownership of your own trajectory, even when it baffles the people around you, is the only way to build a life of genuine value.
Refusing the Pre-Packaged Identity
That lesson in independence became critical when I arrived in the United States to pursue my Ph.D. in Quantitative Sociology. As I navigated these new academic and professional spaces, I found that the most rigid scripts aren't always about our careers. Sometimes, they are about our identity.
There is often an overwhelming, unspoken presumption about what an immigrant woman is supposed to believe, what her worldview must be, and how she should act. Parts of society expect you to fit neatly into a very specific, predetermined ideological box. When you step outside of that—when your core values are unapologetically rooted in individual accountability, self-reliance, and merit—it can catch some people off guard.
Navigating the world when you do not fit the mold people have built for you can be a solitary experience. It is tempting to simply nod along and play the character society expects. But true agency requires the discipline to stand by your own principles, regardless of the assumptions projected onto you.
Building Beyond the Boundaries
Staying true to that internal compass ultimately shaped my next major decision. After earning my doctorate, conventional wisdom dictated that I should stay safely within my discipline and pursue a standard academic or research career. But education should be a foundation for innovation, not a boundary line.
Instead of staying within the comfortable confines of a traditional path, I chose entrepreneurship.
I founded Handis-Studio, stepping completely outside the expected narrative. Building a business that merges my background in quantitative data with generative AI and the art world did not fit a standard résumé, but it perfectly aligned with my vision. I didn't wait for permission or the perfect conditions; I relied on the same self-reliance that prompted me to walk away from engineering years ago.
The True Meaning of Empowerment
We are not obligated to be what we are told to be. We are only obligated to be authentic to ourselves.
Being a woman who stands firmly on self-reliance in today's highly ideological spaces takes a remarkable amount of courage. In many ways, exercising that intellectual independence honors women's equality far more than simply adopting the pre-packaged identity you were assigned.
