A Mother's Resilience: How One Woman Overcame Betrayal and Built a Life of Love for Her Children
In 1976, my father left us for a younger woman—my mother's younger sister.
When it happened, my mother's self-esteem went from confidence to complete confusion. She struggled with brain fog and could not understand or process how everything had happened.
How could she suddenly find herself alone, in a matter of seconds, with two children, ages 8 and 6, limited work experience, and language barriers, trying to survive in a country that was still unfamiliar to her? All because one individual refused to remain committed to his marriage.
My mother arrived in California in 1976, and less than a year later, she was separated from the man—my father—who had promised her security, love, and, most of all, peace of mind. He had assured her that everything would be fine and that they had a bright future ahead of them. Instead, the opposite happened.
As soon as my mother brought her sinister, jealous, and manipulative sister to live with us, she managed to seduce my father. She deliberately created conflict between my parents, causing them to argue endlessly. My mother had no idea that behind all the betrayal was a jealous woman who could not come to terms with herself or find a man of her own. Instead, she saw my father as an easy target.
I was born with a hearing impairment in both ears, and my brother struggled with severe anxiety as a child.
For many years, my mother survived by working hard just to make ends meet. From time to time, she would take us to Knott's Berry Farm so we could sit on the grass outside the park, listen to the sounds of the rides, and enjoy the atmosphere. Back then, the area outside the park was a beautiful place where families could have a picnic without buying admission. It was free, and somehow, she made it feel special.
My mother also made sure we had other small moments of joy. She would take us to the Disneyland Hotel to watch the free water show and listen to the fireworks. She always did her best to give us happy memories, even though life was incredibly difficult.
Now that I am 55 years old, I can only imagine the emotional strength it took for her to maintain her focus at work while knowing that her husband and her former sister were enjoying life together. Somehow, she held back her tears, remained brave, and never allowed my brother or me to see the depth of her sadness. She never encouraged us to think negatively of our father. She was an incredibly strong woman.
As women, we often feel the need to go back to our former partners and explain our point of view or demand answers. Needless to say, it is usually pointless. A man whose heart is invested in someone else will not hear your cries or the screams that come from the deepest part of a woman's broken heart. Even when her heart has been shattered into millions of pieces, she still tries to hold herself together.
