The Business I Never Planned to Build: How Solving One Problem Changed My Entire Life
From Solving One Problem to Building a Life of Purpose: How a Military Spouse Became a Business Owner, Coach, and Nonprofit Founder
If you had told me years ago that I would one day own multiple businesses, lead a team, coach aspiring virtual assistants and service-based business owners, and be in the process of launching a nonprofit, I probably would have laughed.
Not because I didn’t believe in myself, but because none of it was part of the plan. Like many women, my journey started with trying to solve a problem.
As a military spouse and mother, I wanted flexibility. I wanted to contribute financially to my family while still being present for the moments that mattered most. I wasn’t searching for entrepreneurship. I wasn’t dreaming about becoming a CEO. I simply needed something that fit the season of life I was in.
That search led me to the world of virtual assistance.
My very first client
My very first client was a fitness coach. I supported her as her virtual assistant for about two months, and while the role itself was relatively simple, it gave me something invaluable: proof that this could work.
That one opportunity opened a door I never expected to walk through.
As I worked with more clients, I began seeing a bigger picture. I wasn’t just completing tasks. I was helping business owners create systems, improve processes, stay organized, and reclaim their time. I was learning how businesses operated behind the scenes, and with every client, my knowledge grew.
Over time, The Virtual Helping Hand (https://www.thevirtualhelpinghand.com/) evolved from traditional virtual assistant support into a business focused on operations, systems, project management, marketing support, websites, and strategic business support.
Then came another milestone I’ll never forget: hiring my first team member. She was a fellow military spouse, and to this day, she holds a very special place in my heart. She challenged me when I needed to be challenged, supported me when I needed encouragement, and helped me see possibilities for the business that I couldn’t always see myself. What started as hiring help became a lesson in leadership, trust, and community.
As the business continued to grow
As the business continued to grow, I noticed something else.
Many of the entrepreneurs I supported weren’t struggling because they lacked talent or expertise. They were struggling because they lacked clarity, confidence, systems, or a strategy to move forward. The same questions came up again and again:
- How do I find clients?
- How do I package my services?
- How do I grow sustainably?
- How do I stop feeling like I’m making it up as I go?
Those conversations naturally led me into coaching. Today, in addition to running The Virtual Helping Hand, I coach aspiring virtual assistants and service-based business owners. I help women build businesses with confidence, create sustainable systems, and develop the clarity they need to move forward. What began as supporting businesses behind the scenes grew into helping women build businesses of their own.
The most unexpected chapter
But the most unexpected chapter of my journey began in 2025. Last year, I was diagnosed with major depressive disorder.
While receiving a diagnosis brought answers, it also revealed something else: I was struggling to find the kind of support and community I desperately wanted. Resources existed, but genuine connection felt harder to find. I knew I couldn’t be the only woman feeling that way.
The more I thought about it, the more I realized how many mothers were quietly carrying the same weight. They were showing up for everyone around them while struggling behind closed doors. They were feeling isolated, overwhelmed, anxious, depressed, or simply unseen. And many didn’t know where to turn.
That realization became the foundation for The Light Within Initiative (https://www.lightwithininitiative.org/).
The organization was born from a simple belief: no mother should have to navigate mental health challenges alone. What started as my search for support evolved into a mission to create support for others.
Today, The Light Within Initiative is being built to provide connection, resources, community, and hope for mothers who need a reminder that even in their darkest seasons, there is still light within them.
None of this was part of the original plan
Looking back, it’s funny how none of this was part of the original plan.
- I didn’t set out to become a business owner.
- I didn’t set out to build a team.
- I didn’t set out to become a coach.
- I certainly didn’t set out to launch a nonprofit.
I simply said yes to solving one problem at a time.
And with each solution came a new opportunity, a new lesson, and a new purpose.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned through this journey, it’s that sometimes the path you’re meant to walk doesn’t begin with a grand vision. Sometimes it begins with a single step toward solving a problem that’s right in front of you.
You don’t have to have the entire roadmap. You just have to be willing to take the next step. For me, that next step changed my entire life.
