The Courage to Care: Leadership, Humanity, and the Legacy We Leave Behind

By Erika Burnham, Ph.D., Ed.D., MBA, BSN, RN, CDP, Death Doula

2026 Influential Woman Award Recipient

Being recognized as a 2026 Influential Woman is an honor that represents far more than a professional achievement. It represents decades of service, growth, resilience, and a commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

Throughout my career as a registered nurse, hospice leader, dementia care advocate, healthcare professional, and life coach, I have had the privilege of standing beside people during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. I have witnessed moments of uncertainty, chaos, fear, grief, transition, and profound human connection. These experiences have shaped my understanding of leadership and reinforced one important truth:

True influence is not measured by a title, a position, or recognition. True influence is measured by the lives we impact, the people we empower, and the legacy we leave behind.

Leadership is often associated with authority, decision-making, and achieving outcomes. While those elements matter, I believe the most impactful leaders understand that leadership is fundamentally about people. It is about showing up with compassion, integrity, courage, and a willingness to serve.

Leadership Is More Than a Position—It Is a Responsibility

I have been blessed to experience many impactful industries throughout my lifetime. However, my journey through healthcare has provided me with a unique perspective on leadership.

From caring for patients at the bedside to serving in leadership roles focused on quality, operations, and patient care—and now as a life coach—I have learned that leadership is not about being above others; it is about standing beside them.

Healthcare leaders are entrusted with more than policies, processes, and performance goals. We are entrusted with people's lives, well-being, and human experiences. Every decision we make has an impact—not only on the patients and families we serve but also on the teams who dedicate themselves to providing care every day.

The greatest leaders I have encountered are not necessarily the loudest voices in the room. They are the individuals who listen. They are the ones who recognize the strengths in others, create opportunities for growth, and cultivate environments where people feel valued.

Leadership requires humility. It requires the ability to acknowledge that we do not have all the answers and the wisdom to seek input from those around us. It requires understanding that every person brings experiences, perspectives, and gifts that contribute to the success of an organization.

In healthcare, leadership is a responsibility to protect the dignity of patients, support the professionals providing care, and create cultures where compassion is not simply encouraged—it is expected.

The Lessons Hospice Taught Me About Leadership

Hospice has been one of my greatest teachers.

Working in hospice provides a unique perspective on life, humanity, and leadership unlike any other area of healthcare. Hospice reminds us that while we may not always be able to change the outcome, we can always influence the experience.

  • We can offer comfort.
  • We can provide presence.
  • We can listen.
  • We can advocate.
  • We can remind people that their lives have meaning and their stories do matter.

These lessons extend far beyond end-of-life care. They are lessons every leader should embrace.

One of the greatest leadership skills is the ability to be present. In a world that often moves quickly, true presence has become a rare and valuable gift. Employees want to know they are seen. Patients and families want to know they are heard. People want to know they matter.

Leadership also requires courage. Healthcare is filled with difficult conversations, complex decisions, and moments of uncertainty. Leaders must be willing to address challenges honestly while remaining compassionate and solutions-focused.

Hospice has taught me that courage is not the absence of discomfort. Courage is the willingness to remain engaged, even when situations are difficult.

Caring for the Caregivers: The Responsibility of Healthcare Leadership

One of the greatest challenges facing healthcare today is ensuring that those who provide care are also cared for.

Healthcare professionals enter this field because they want to make a difference. They dedicate themselves to others during moments of crisis, illness, and vulnerability. However, the emotional and physical demands of healthcare can create significant challenges, including burnout, compassion fatigue, emotional exhaustion, and difficulty maintaining self-care.

We cannot continue asking caregivers to give endlessly without creating environments where they can also receive support, encouragement, and opportunities for renewal.

Healthcare leadership must recognize that employee well-being is not a luxury. It is a necessity.

Supporting caregivers means creating cultures where:

  • Questions are welcomed.
  • Concerns are heard and validated.
  • Growth is encouraged.
  • Contributions are recognized.
  • People feel psychologically safe.

When healthcare professionals feel valued and supported, they are better equipped to provide exceptional care to those in their charge.

The future of healthcare depends not only on innovation, technology, and clinical advancements; it depends on our ability to preserve the humanity at the center of healthcare.

The Future of Leadership: Humanity as a Competitive Advantage

Healthcare continues to evolve at an extraordinary pace. Technology, artificial intelligence, changing regulations, and new models of care are transforming how healthcare is delivered.

However, one thing will never become obsolete: human connection.

The more advanced healthcare becomes technologically, the more important compassionate leadership becomes.

The leaders of tomorrow must understand that efficiency and empathy are not opposing forces. Excellence requires both.

Future leaders must be willing to:

  • Lead with emotional intelligence.
  • Develop and mentor others.
  • Create inclusive environments.
  • Embrace innovation while protecting human connection.
  • Recognize that every person has value.

The most successful organizations will not simply be those with the newest technology or the strongest metrics. They will be organizations where people feel respected, supported, valued, and connected to a greater purpose.

Empowering Others to E.V.O.L.V.E.

My personal mission has expanded beyond caring for individuals during some of life's most challenging moments. It has grown into empowering others to recognize their own value, purpose, and potential.

Through my work with E.V.O.L.V.E. 4 You LLC, I have embraced the belief that transformation begins when individuals recognize that growth is possible.

E.V.O.L.V.E. represents a commitment to:

Encourage growth and embrace your truth — because everyone has the capacity to continue learning and becoming.

Value authenticity and celebrate victory through growth — because true leadership begins with knowing and honoring who we are.

Overcome barriers and own your story — because challenges do not define us; they refine us.

Lead with confidence and love without limits — because our voices and experiences matter.

Vision with purpose and value your worth — because meaningful impact requires intentional direction.

Empower transformation and emerge unstoppable — because the greatest leaders create more leaders.

Whether through healthcare, coaching, mentoring, advocacy, or service, my goal remains the same: to help people recognize their ability to create meaningful change.

The Legacy We Leave

At the heart of leadership is one powerful question:

"Did my presence make a difference?"
  • Every patient comforted.
  • Every family supported.
  • Every colleague encouraged.
  • Every person empowered.

These moments become our legacy.

Being named a 2026 Influential Woman is a meaningful recognition, but the greatest honor has always been the opportunity to serve others. Influence is not about being recognized by the world; it is about recognizing the potential in others and having the courage to help them discover it.

Leadership is not about standing above people. It is about standing with them.

And perhaps the greatest measure of influence is not how many people know our name, but how many lives are better because we were there.

That is the courage to care.
