The Hardest Part of Taking a Vacation Isn't Packing... It's Letting Go
Finding peace by choosing presence over productivity.
Sometimes the Most Productive Thing We Can Do Is Simply Be Present
I'm writing this while sitting on the beach with my husband and daughter.
The sound of the waves is calming. My daughter is laughing as she builds sandcastles. The sun is warm, and for a moment, everything feels exactly as it should.
And then...
I wonder if someone emailed me.
Did I miss an important message?
Should I quickly check my inbox?
Is everything okay at work?
I tell myself, "Just one quick look."
If you're a leader, a business owner, or someone who truly cares about your career, you probably know this feeling.
We work so hard to build our careers that sometimes our minds never leave the office—even when our bodies do.
Being Mentally Away from Work Is Much Harder
I've realized something during this vacation.
Being physically away from work is easy.
Being mentally away from work is much harder.
The truth is, work will always be there.
Another email will arrive.
Another meeting will be scheduled.
Another challenge will need solving.
But today's sunset?
My daughter's excitement as she runs into the ocean?
The quiet conversation with my husband while we watch the waves?
Those moments won't wait for my inbox.
Success Isn't Measured Only by How Available We Are to Work
As leaders, we often tell our teams to take time off, recharge, and spend time with their families. Yet many of us struggle to follow that same advice ourselves.
Success isn't measured only by how available we are to work.
It's also measured by how present we are with the people who matter most.
So today, I'm making a promise to myself.
I'll still care deeply about my work.
I'll still lead with passion.
But I'm also choosing to be fully present for the memories that can never be recreated.
Because one day, my daughter won't remember how quickly I replied to an email.
She'll remember whether I was there beside her while she built castles in the sand.
Sometimes the most productive thing we can do is simply be present.
What about you?
When you're on vacation, can you truly disconnect, or does work still find its way into your thoughts?
