The Marketing Advice Nobody Wants to Hear

The fundamentals of marketing success: why consistency and understanding your audience matter more than secrets.

The Marketing Advice Nobody Wants to Hear

Every week on my podcast, “No BS Marketing,” I talk to small business owners who are frustrated. They are posting on social media every day and seeing nothing. They hired someone to run ads and burned through their budget with little to show for it. They built a beautiful website that nobody visits. And the first thing most of them ask me is some version of the same question: What is the secret?

There is no secret. That is the advice nobody wants to hear.

What there is, is fundamentals. Most businesses skip them because fundamentals are not exciting. They do not go viral. You cannot package them into a flashy course, because they require patience instead of shortcuts. But every business I have seen succeed over the long term—whether in my own portfolio at MPowered Ventures or among clients I have worked with over fifteen years—has had one thing in common: they did the unglamorous work first.

Here is what that actually looks like.

Know exactly who you are talking to—not in the vague way most businesses define their audience. Not “women aged 25 to 45 who like wellness.” I mean a specific person. What keeps her up at night. What she searches for at 11 p.m. What she has already tried and why it did not work. The businesses that connect are the ones that make their customer feel seen—and you cannot make someone feel seen if you are speaking to everyone at once.

Be consistent before you are creative. I see businesses spend weeks designing the perfect content calendar, only to abandon it after a month because they did not see results. Consistency is not glamorous, but it is what builds trust—with both your audience and the algorithm. Show up the same way, on the same channels, with the same voice, for longer than feels comfortable. Then make it creative.

Understand where your customers are actually searching. This is changing faster than most people realize. We are in the middle of a massive shift from traditional search to answer-based discovery. People are not just typing keywords into Google anymore; they are asking AI assistants and voice tools for direct answers. If your business is not showing up in those answers, you are invisible to a growing portion of your market. This is not a future problem—it is a right-now problem.

Stop chasing every platform. One of the most common mistakes I see from small business owners is spreading themselves too thin, trying to be everywhere at once. Pick one or two platforms where your customers actually spend time and do those well. A strong presence in one place will always outperform a weak presence in five.

Measure what matters. Vanity metrics—likes, followers, impressions—feel good, but they do not pay your bills. The number that matters is conversion. How many people who find you actually become customers? Work backward from that number, and everything else will start to make sense.

I started “No BS Marketing” because I kept seeing the same pattern: smart, hardworking people pouring energy into their marketing and not getting results—not because they were doing everything wrong, but because nobody had ever sat down and walked them through the basics without trying to sell them something. That is still what I am trying to do.

Marketing does not have to be complicated. It has to be honest, consistent, and built on a real understanding of the person you are trying to reach. Get that right, and the rest is execution.
