The New Definition of Influence

Redefining Influence: It's Not About Followers, It's About Transformation

The New Definition of Influence

Let's be honest. When most of us hear the word "influence," we picture a ring light, a blue checkmark, and a comment section full of fire emojis. Maybe an executive title on a business card. Maybe a Forbes list. We've been conditioned to believe that influence lives at the top of something, whether it's a platform, a paycheck, or a podium.

But what if we've been measuring it all wrong?

Here's what I've noticed: the women who actually changed my life were not the ones with the most followers. They were the ones who kept showing up after the cameras turned off, after the applause faded, and sometimes after things went very, very sideways. They were not influencers. They were transformers.

Real influence is not what you do when everyone is watching. It is what you do when everyone has logged off.

Rebuilding Stories

Society loves a success story. We buy the book, watch the documentary, and pin the quote. But rebuilding stories? They barely get a mention, even though they require an entirely different kind of strength. Rebuilding demands humility when pride feels easier, accountability when excuses are readily available, and a stubborn belief that your worst chapter does not get to write your ending.

The women who have influenced me most were not flawless. They were honest. They faced real consequences, accepted real responsibility, and chose to keep serving others anyway. That is not a weakness. It is a kind of power most people never develop because developing it costs something.

Resilience Made Visible

Resilience, it turns out, is not just about surviving the hard thing. It is about turning the hard thing into a bridge for someone who is still standing at the edge.

Every setback has that potential. Every lesson learned can become someone else's lighthouse. Every door that closed on you can become the door you hold open for the next woman walking through.

A Working Definition of Influence

So here is my working definition of influence—the one I carry with me:

Influence is rebuilding with purpose so that someone else believes they can rebuild, too.

It is not a follower count. It is not a title. It is not the version of your story that looks best in a bio. It is integrity under pressure, resilience made visible, and the decision to create opportunity where none existed before.

As women, we have an extraordinary opportunity to redefine what leadership actually looks like for the generation coming up behind us. We can show them that the most powerful thing they can do is not maintain a perfect image. It is to have the courage to grow in public.

The legacy we leave will not be measured by our highlight reel. It will be measured by the lives we helped restore, the people we chose to believe in, and the hope we left behind for someone who thought her story was already over.

That is influence. And it cannot be purchased, filtered, or faked.
