The Power of You

Always Choose Yourself

There comes a point in life when you realize that constantly choosing everyone else comes with a heavy price to your mental and emotional well-being. Eventually, you lose yourself.

For many of us, choosing ourselves does not come naturally. In fact, it can feel downright uncomfortable.

Many times, because of cultural expectations and societal pressures, we are taught to sacrifice more, give more, tolerate more, stay longer, explain more, and shrink ourselves so others remain comfortable. Somewhere along the way, we begin to confuse being kind with abandoning ourselves. We think that saying “no” to others and choosing ourselves is selfish. But choosing yourself is not selfish—it is crucial, and it is necessary.

Consistently abandoning your own needs will eventually crush you. No one else is responsible for your happiness and peace but you. Setting boundaries with others is one of the most important things you can do for your own well-being. Sure, there will be people who dislike the version of you who prioritizes yourself. But know that the people who truly care about you and your happiness will support the decisions that honor who you are.

Unfortunately, choosing yourself sometimes means walking away from people and situations that continuously drain you and no longer serve you in any meaningful way. Too many of us carry burdens that are not ours to carry. Just because we can carry them does not mean we should.

Many of us have been led to believe that we must stick with decisions we once made. However, we grow and evolve. As we do, new versions of ourselves emerge. We are allowed to change our minds. We are allowed to outgrow people and situations. We should be encouraged to stop forcing what no longer fits.

We often know what is in our best interest, yet we go against it. Because it is easier. Because we are waiting for validation. Because we are waiting for permission to show up as our most authentic selves. But while we wait, life continues moving forward.

Choosing yourself means realizing that no one is coming to save you. Everything you need is already within you. Show up for yourself. Invest in yourself. Keep promises to yourself. Protect your peace.

Stop being a martyr for everyone else. Constant self-sacrifice does not make you a better person. It does not make you more loved, valued, or appreciated. More often than not, it results in you being taken for granted.

As the saying goes, “Wherever you go, there you are.” Your priority is you. Your responsibility is you.

Long after relationships, friendships, and jobs shift or end; after circumstances change; and after people come and go—you remain.

So choose yourself. Fully. Daily. Without hesitation. Without fear. Without guilt.

Choose your peace.

Choose your growth.

Choose the best version of yourself.

Choose the path of your becoming.

Know that the moment you start choosing yourself is the moment you begin stepping into the best version of who you are.
