The Process Between the Promise and the Purpose

Life Is Rarely a Straight Line

Life is filled with twists and turns, unexpected detours, mountaintop moments, and deep valleys. There are seasons when everything seems to be moving forward and others when it feels as though life has come to a complete standstill. Yet through every stage of the journey, we must learn to keep our eyes on the bigger picture.

One of the most powerful examples of this truth is found in the life of Joseph.

As a young man, Joseph received a dream from God that revealed his future (Genesis 37:6–10). God showed him the destination, but He did not show him the process.

Joseph saw the dream, but he did not see the betrayal.

He did not see his brothers turning against him. He did not see the pit. He did not see being sold into slavery. He did not see false accusations, imprisonment, disappointment, or years of waiting. He did not know that people would misunderstand him, misuse him, or attempt to destroy what God had placed inside him.

Joseph saw the promise, but he could not see the preparation.

Isn't that often true for us?

We pray for purpose but resist the process.
We ask God for influence but struggle through seasons of obscurity.
We desire the palace but want to avoid the pit.

Yet it was in every difficult chapter of Joseph's life that God was shaping his character, strengthening his faith, and preparing him for the responsibility attached to his calling.

When Joseph finally stood before his brothers years later, he was able to say, "You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good" (Genesis 50:20).

What looked like a setback was actually a setup for God's greater plan.

As a coach, minister, and woman who has experienced both profound loss and remarkable restoration, I have learned that life unfolds much like a story. Every meaningful story has an arc—a beginning, a middle, and an ending. The most powerful parts of the story are often found in the middle, where the struggle, growth, and transformation take place.

Most of us know our beginning through memories, family stories, triumphs, mistakes, heartbreaks, and defining moments.

We are living in the middle right now.

And our future remains largely unseen.

The challenge is that while we can celebrate the beginning and dream about the ending, we often become frustrated by the middle. The middle feels messy. It is where prayers seem unanswered, doors close unexpectedly, relationships change, and life doesn't unfold according to our timeline.

Yet the middle is where growth happens.

The middle is where faith is stretched.

The middle is where purpose is refined.

Unlike a movie or a novel, we don't have access to the final chapter. We cannot skip ahead to see how everything turns out. But we serve a God who already sees the complete picture.

Scripture reminds us:

"For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." (Jeremiah 29:11)

While we may only see one page at a time, God sees the entire story.

That doesn't mean life will be easy.

There will be seasons of grief.

Seasons of uncertainty.

Seasons when you question whether your dream is still possible.

Seasons when it feels as though you've taken three steps backward instead of moving forward.

But your current chapter is not your final chapter.

As long as there is breath in your body, there is still purpose within you.

You may have been delayed, but you are not denied.

You may have experienced loss, but your life has not lost its value.

You may have fallen, but God is still writing your story.

A Path Forward

When life feels uncertain, remember these truths:

1. Trust the Process

Not every delay is a denial. Some seasons are designed to develop the strength, wisdom, and character needed for your next assignment.

2. Focus on the Next Step

You do not need to have the entire plan figured out. Often, God provides enough light for the next step—not the entire journey.

3. Learn From Every Season

Even painful experiences can become valuable lessons that shape your purpose and prepare you to help others.

4. Refuse to Give Up

Dreams often take longer than expected. What God has placed within you is worth pursuing, even when progress feels slow.

5. Stay Connected to Your Purpose

Purpose is not a destination you arrive at once and for all. It is a lifelong journey of becoming who God created you to be.

Many people spend their lives searching for meaning, significance, and fulfillment. The truth is that purpose is not discovered overnight. It unfolds over time through experiences, relationships, victories, failures, faith, and perseverance.

Dr. Myles Munroe once said, "The greatest tragedy in life is not death, but life without a reason."

There is something powerful about knowing why you are here.

When you understand your purpose, setbacks become lessons instead of defeats. Delays become preparation instead of punishment. Challenges become opportunities for growth instead of reasons to quit.

Your story is still unfolding.

The dream God placed in your heart may take a different path than you expected, but that does not mean it will not come to pass.

Keep believing.

Keep growing.

Keep trusting.

And keep moving forward.

Because the same God who gave you the dream is faithful to walk with you through the process.

The pit was not Joseph's destination.

Neither is your current struggle.

Trust the Author.

He already knows how the story ends.
