The Road I Traveled
How I Chose to Stay Soft When the World Gave Me Every Reason to Harden
The road I have traveled has never been an easy one.
It has been full of challenges - working around the clock, giving everything I had, only to be overlooked for promotions I had more than earned. There were times I stayed quiet, and even in my silence, I was told I was smart but intimidating. As if my competence were something to apologize for. As if the very thing that made me capable was also the thing that made me a threat.
I've been turned down for positions I never even applied for, told that hiring me would feel like hiring their own replacement.
Let that sink in.
I wasn't competing for their seat. I wasn't trying to take anything from anyone. But my presence alone made people uncomfortable enough to close doors before I ever knocked.
For a long time, I chose silence. I handed my ideas to others and watched them claim those ideas as their own, and I told myself that was what being a "good team player" looked like. I shrank myself to make other people comfortable. I stayed quiet so I wouldn't be seen as "too much."
But somewhere along that road, something in me shifted.
I learned to value my own voice. My own instincts.
I learned that my ideas were mine to speak, mine to own, and mine to build upon - and that handing them away wasn't teamwork; it was self-erasure.
I stopped shrinking.
I stopped translating my brilliance into something smaller and more palatable for other people's comfort.
And here's what I want you to understand: none of it hardened my heart.
I could have let it. I had every reason to. I could have let the overlooked promotions, the closed doors, the stolen ideas, and the label of "intimidating" turn me bitter, guarded, and cold.
Instead, I made a choice - over and over again - to stay soft. To keep leading with love. To keep extending kindness, even in spaces that hadn't extended it to me.
That, I believe, is the real victory.
Not just surviving the road, but arriving on the other side of it with your heart still open.
If you are walking a similar road right now - if you've been called "too much" simply for being excellent, if your ideas have been taken, if doors have closed on you for reasons that were never about your ability - hear me when I say this:
Your voice was never the problem. Their comfort was never your responsibility.
Speak anyway.
Lead anyway.
Build anyway.
And whatever you do, don't let it harden you.
Because the world doesn't need another hardened heart.
It needs yours - the one that went through everything and still chose to lead with love.
