The Unexpected Doors
Finding Connection and Purpose Through Unexpected Encounters
The Unexpected Doors
By Susan Lyn Sykes
Today was one of those days that reminded me why I love people.
I drove to Nashville with a few hours before my meeting, so I decided to visit senior centers and see if I could find opportunities to provide Medicare education during AEP.
I didn't know exactly what would happen.
But everywhere I went, someone opened a door.
One center wasn't open yet, but I discovered a beautiful park. At another, an activities director welcomed the idea of working together in January. At another, two charming gentlemen helped point me toward the right person.
Then I went to my insurance meeting—and accidentally walked into the wrong building.
That "mistake" introduced me to several wonderful agents. We talked, exchanged cards and shared experiences. I learned from women who have been doing Medicare work for years.
I also reconnected with women I had met the week before. We were genuinely happy to see one another.
And one conversation stayed with me. A woman told me about being recruited years ago and then essentially being left on her own. It made me appreciate even more the training, support and community available to us today.
But perhaps my favorite part of the day happened after all of that.
I stopped at a dress shop and started talking with a woman who was preparing to sell her business. We talked about life, change and what comes next.
And I thought:
This is what I'm learning.
The work isn't just about Medicare cards, plans, enrollment periods or appointments.
It's about people.
It's about sitting down with someone, listening to their story, learning what matters to them and building enough trust that they know you're there to serve—not simply to sell.
After years of working in an environment where communication looked very different, I've discovered something I really enjoy: being around people who communicate, teach, share and encourage one another.
I like learning from them.
I like listening to their stories.
And I like the unexpected bonds that happen when people take the time to truly talk.
Maybe that's the real beginning of this new chapter for me.
Not knowing exactly where every road will lead—but being willing to take the next turn.
Sometimes the wrong turn is exactly where the right people are waiting.
