We Are Teachers
Teachers prepare the people who become doctors, lawyers, engineers, scientists, journalists, dentists, astronauts, entrepreneurs, and leaders in every field. Taking a retrospective look, most of us can remember at least one teacher who helped shape our future.
For me, that influence began at home. My late mother was a dedicated elementary school teacher who spent 37 years encouraging her students, my brother, and me. My maternal grandfather, along with aunts and uncles on both sides of my family, also devoted their lives to educating students from kindergarten through university.
It is now my turn and opportunity to give back. After 30 years in international development, I began a second career in teaching (middle school English Language Arts) so I could help shape the next generation. I also write and publish children's empowerment books.
Teachers serve beyond the classroom. At my school, teachers have created initiatives that support the wider community, including:
- Foundations serving people with physical and mental disabilities
- Financial literacy programs
- Mentoring programs, including one I lead
Yet these efforts often receive little or no outside support. Too often, teachers fund them from their modest salaries.
Teachers Deserve a Voice
Teachers understand the challenges facing their students and communities, and we have practical solutions. The question is: Who is listening?
Our voices and ideas deserve to be heard. After all, we helped educate the experts.
