When Every YES Is Also a NO
Why the most powerful word a leader can speak is "no"
Every Yes Is Also a No
The hardest decisions in life are rarely between good and bad. Most of us can recognize a bad opportunity, a harmful commitment, or a responsibility that clearly does not belong to us. The real struggle comes when the choice is between good, very good, and excellent. That's where I've gotten into trouble.
I am a helper by nature and by choice. Supporting others feeds my soul, and much of my life has been shaped by service—as a mother, mentor, veteran advocate, employee, business owner, nonprofit leader, author, student, and board member.
I don't regret any of those roles because they reflect who I am and what I value. What I had to learn, however, is that wanting to help does not create more hours in the day.
Every yes is also a no.
Each time I accept one more commitment, I am saying no to something else. I may be saying no to rest, my health, my family, my education, the work only I can do, or the people and mission God has already entrusted to me.
That does not mean the new opportunity is unworthy. Sometimes it is excellent. Sometimes I want it badly. Sometimes I know I would be good at it.
That is exactly why saying no can be so difficult.
For years, I asked myself only one question: Can I do this?
The answer was usually yes. I had spent a lifetime proving that I could carry a heavy load, work long hours, manage competing priorities, and keep moving when I was tired.
But Can I do this? was the wrong question.
The better questions are harder:
- Is this mine to carry?
- Can I accept this excellent opportunity and still give my full effort to the commitments I already have?
- Can I make room for it without neglecting something else that matters?
- Do I truly have the capacity to do it justice?
Those questions require honesty.
It is possible to want an opportunity, respect the mission, admire the people involved, and still not have the capacity to serve well. Wanting to do something and having the ability to honor it are not the same thing.
Sometimes the most responsible answer to an excellent opportunity is still:
"Not now."
