How a Career Setback Taught Me That Leadership Is About So Much More Than Results

Leadership, Perception, and the Lessons We Learn Along the Way

For most of my career, I believed that if I worked hard, delivered exceptional results, invested in my teams, and remained loyal to my organization, the next opportunity would naturally follow.

After more than three decades in healthcare leadership, I have learned that leadership—and careers—are far more complex than that.

A Difficult Season

Recently, I found myself navigating one of the most difficult seasons of my professional life. Organizational restructuring changed the future I had envisioned. A role I believed I had earned evolved into something very different, and commitments I had counted on could no longer be fulfilled because business priorities had changed.

It was heartbreaking.

Like many leaders, I initially searched for answers. I questioned my decisions, replayed conversations in my mind, and wondered whether approaching certain situations differently would have changed the outcome.

I have always been a confident, direct leader. Throughout my career, I have never been afraid to ask difficult questions, challenge decisions when I believed the organization was at risk, or advocate fiercely for what I felt was right. Those qualities helped me grow into executive leadership, build high-performing teams, and earn the trust of the people I served.

But this experience forced me to confront a difficult possibility.

What if the very qualities that made me successful were, at times, being perceived differently than I intended?

That realization was uncomfortable.

Leadership Is Not Only About Results

Leadership is not only about results. It is also about perception, influence, and relationships.

As leaders, we often focus on improving operational performance, financial outcomes, patient experience, employee engagement, and strategic execution. We spend far less time asking ourselves an equally important question:

How do others experience my leadership?

There is an important difference.

I have learned that two people can witness the exact same interaction and walk away with completely different impressions. Confidence can be interpreted as intimidation. Passion can be mistaken for confrontation. High expectations can be perceived as inflexibility.

That doesn't necessarily make either person wrong.

It simply reminds us that leadership is as much about emotional intelligence as it is about operational excellence.

A Balancing Act

For women in executive leadership, this lesson can feel especially personal.

Many of us have experienced the delicate balance between being seen as decisive and being perceived as "too much." We are expected to be confident, yet approachable. Strong, but not intimidating. Assertive, but never aggressive.

It is a balancing act that many women quietly navigate throughout their careers.

What I Can Control

For me, this experience became less about a title and more about self-awareness.

I realized that I cannot control every organizational decision, every leadership transition, or every opportunity that comes—or doesn't come—my way.

What I can control is how I respond.

I can continue learning.

I can continue listening.

I can continue refining not only how I lead organizations but also how I influence people.

Most importantly, I can choose not to allow disappointment to define my confidence.

After more than 30 years in healthcare leadership, I know the value I bring. I know the lives I've impacted, the teams I've developed, the organizations I've helped transform, and the leaders I've had the privilege to mentor.

None of that disappears because one chapter didn't unfold the way I expected.

Careers Are Rarely Linear

If this season has taught me anything, it's that careers are rarely linear.

Sometimes the opportunity you expected isn't the opportunity you're meant to pursue.

Sometimes a closed door creates the space to build something entirely your own.

Leadership Is About Resilience

Leadership has never been about holding a title.

Leadership is about resilience. It is about maintaining integrity when circumstances are disappointing. It is about choosing professionalism over resentment, reflection over blame, and growth over comfort.

As I look toward the next chapter of my career, I carry this experience with me—not as a setback, but as one of the most valuable leadership lessons I have ever learned.

Because true leadership isn't measured by how we lead when everything goes according to plan.

It is measured by who we become when it doesn't.
