Why Do We Feel the Need to Prove Who We Are?
Why Your Character Matters More Than Your Marketing
Why Do We Feel the Need to Prove Who We Are?
Lately, I've been receiving more and more messages on LinkedIn.
"Let us feature you."
"We can publish an article about your success."
"We can promote your personal brand."
Of course, there is a cost.
Every time I read one of those messages, I pause and ask myself a simple question:
Why do we feel such a strong need to prove to others who we are?
Don't get me wrong—there is value in marketing, public relations, and sharing your story. They all have their place, and many professionals use them effectively.
But I also believe there is something even more powerful:
- Your work.
- Your character.
- Your consistency.
- The way you treat people when no one is watching.
Throughout my career, I've learned that titles can be given, awards can be won, and articles can be written. But none of those things define who we truly are.
They are defined by:
- The people we've helped.
- The teams we've led.
- The promises we've kept.
- The difficult moments when we chose integrity over recognition.
If someone writes about me one day, I hope it's because my work made a difference—not because I paid for someone to tell the world who I am.
The greatest compliments I've ever received didn't come from a magazine or a social media post. They came from people who trusted me, believed in me, or felt that I had made a positive impact on their lives.
That kind of recognition cannot be purchased.
It has to be earned.
So today, instead of asking ourselves, "How can I get more people to notice me?" perhaps we should ask:
"Am I becoming the kind of person worth noticing?"
Because when your character speaks loudly, you don't have to spend nearly as much time convincing people who you are.
Your reputation will do it for you.
Remember: Build a life that speaks for itself. Recognition may come later—or it may not. But integrity, kindness, and genuine impact will always outlast publicity.
Quote of the Week
"Don't spend your life proving your value. Spend it creating value. The right people will notice."
