You Don't Need Permission to Become Someone New
Permission isn't coming, and that's exactly when your life starts belonging to you.
There comes a point in many people's lives when the person they've been no longer feels like the person they're becoming. And strangely, that can be terrifying. Not because we don't want to change, but because change has consequences. People know us a certain way. They expect certain things from us. We've built relationships, routines, responsibilities, and entire lives around versions of ourselves that may no longer fit.
So we wait.
We wait until we're more confident. Until the timing is better. Until the kids are older. Until we have more money. Until someone understands. Until someone believes in us.
Sometimes, without even realizing it, we're waiting for permission. But permission isn't coming. And maybe that's the best thing that could happen. Because the moment you realize nobody else gets to authorize your becoming is the moment your life starts belonging to you again.
You are allowed to change your mind.
You are allowed to discover something you love at 30, 40, 50, 60, or 80. You are allowed to walk away from dreams that once mattered to you and chase ones that didn't even exist five years ago. You are allowed to become more ambitious. More creative. More outspoken. More peaceful. More selective. More you.
And you don't have to hate the person you were in order to become the person you're becoming. Maybe you did the best you could with what you knew. Maybe you survived things you don't have to survive anymore. Maybe you made choices that got you here. Thank yourself. And then keep going.
One of the most dangerous ideas we can accept is that eventually we become a finished product-that at some arbitrary age, we're supposed to know exactly who we are and remain that person forever.
We're not finished. We're living. And living things change.
So if there's a version of you quietly trying to emerge-a business owner, an artist, a traveler, a student, a leader, a woman with boundaries, a woman who takes up space, or simply a woman who wants a different life-stop asking whether everyone else will understand you.
They don't have to.
You don't need a unanimous vote to change your own life.
You don't need permission to become someone new.
You just need the courage to begin.
