You Never Know Who You'll Meet on a Morning Walk
This morning didn't begin the way I expected.
It began with an excited neighborhood dog that greeted me a little too enthusiastically. Thankfully, the dog's owner and her son responded immediately, helped me, and made sure I was okay. What could have been the end of the story turned into the beginning of a fascinating conversation.
As we talked, I learned that she had moved here about two years ago. She serves our community in Emergency Medical Services, and her son is also involved in emergency response. Naturally, our conversation turned to serving others.
Then she mentioned something that immediately caught my attention: geriatric education.
As someone who works with people on Medicare every day, I realized how valuable it would be to better understand the aging body, the challenges older adults face, and the medical concerns that often accompany aging. While I help people navigate their Medicare options, expanding my knowledge of the physical and practical realities of aging would allow me to serve them with even greater understanding and compassion.
She told me about an eight-week first aid course focused on caring for older adults that begins in January. My interest was immediate.
Then she surprised me again.
She explained that to participate, I would first need to become a member of the local fire department. I quickly laughed and explained that while my husband is a firefighter, I've heard enough stories over the years to know that active firefighting isn't where my gifts lie!
That's when she introduced me to another possibility: the department's auxiliary. I still have a lot to learn about what that role involves, but it opened my eyes to another way to serve my community. It could be an opportunity to volunteer, support first responders, become more involved locally, and continue building relationships with the very people I hope to help through Medicare education.
One unexpected encounter reminded me of an important lesson: every conversation has the potential to teach us something new.
Sometimes the greatest opportunities don't come from a carefully planned networking event or a business meeting. Sometimes they happen on an ordinary morning walk with someone you've never met before.
I'm looking forward to learning more about geriatric education, discovering what the fire department auxiliary does, and continuing to find new ways to better serve the older adults in my community.
