About Alexandra

Alexandra Chaves, Assoc. AIA, NOMA, is a Venezuelan-born architect and Project Manager at Restructure Studio in Austin, Texas, where she specializes in custom residential architecture, historic renovations, and high-end interior projects. With more than 20 years of experience in the architecture field, she has developed expertise in guiding projects from early research and concept design through permitting, construction documentation, and construction observation. Her work combines thoughtful design strategies, technical expertise, and a strong focus on creating spaces that enhance the way people live. Alexandra earned her BFA majoring in Architecture and Master of Architecture degrees from Savannah College of Art and Design and has built a diverse career in New York, and Texas. Before joining Restructure Studio, she gained experience working in New York for over a decade before relocating to Austin, where she became deeply involved in the local architecture community. Fluent in English and Spanish, she brings a bicultural perspective to her practice and is passionate about design, storytelling, sustainability, and the intersection of architecture, art, and community. Beyond her professional practice, Alexandra is a dedicated advocate for mentorship, leadership, and advancing women in architecture. Through AIA Austin’s Women in Architecture (WiA) committee, she has served as founder and chair of the 'Profiles' Video Interview Series, Committee Chair-Elect, and 2025 Committee Chair, creating platforms that highlight women leaders in the profession. Her contributions have earned her recognition including the 2023 AIA Austin President’s Award, the 2024 AIA Austin Associate Member of the Year Award, and help WiA obtained a mentorship-focused honors for the community impact. Recently she was named 2026 Texas Society of Architects Associate Member of the Year. She continues to inspire the next generation of architects through advocacy, scholarships, education, and volunteer leadership.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to resilience, perseverance, and determination. Overcoming challenges related to ADHD and dyslexia has strengthened my ability to adapt, stay focused, and continue working toward my goals.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve received is to build strong relationships and network consistently. Creating connections and allowing others to recognize my work can open doors to new opportunities and growth.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the industry is to stay resilient and adaptable. The world is constantly changing, so being open to learning and embracing new challenges is essential for growth and success.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenges in my field right now include preparing for natural disasters and finding cost-effective building materials. Addressing these challenges requires innovation, resilience, and a focus on creating safer, more sustainable, and affordable solutions.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me are growth, mentorship, and empowerment. I believe in supporting and inspiring the next generation by sharing knowledge, creating opportunities, and helping others reach their full potential.
