Ten minutes with Alexis
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to two incredible women in my life my mother, Adrianne McCray Steen, and my daughter, Ashton Alexandria. My mother taught me what it means to be a strong, resilient, and successful woman by leading through faith, perseverance, and unconditional love. She laid the foundation for the values that guide both my personal life and my career.
My daughter is my greatest motivation. She watches everything I do from competing on the pageant stage to delivering keynote speeches, leading teams, and serving my community. When she tells me she wants to be just like me, it reminds me that leadership isn’t just about professional success; it’s about setting an example. Every decision I make is driven by the legacy I hope to leave for her and the generations that follow.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I have ever received is to recognize that I belong in every room I have worked hard to enter. Early in my career, I sometimes questioned whether I was truly qualified, but I learned that my education, experience, and leadership were earned not given. That mindset helped me overcome imposter syndrome and step into opportunities with confidence.
Today, I remind myself that I don’t need to shrink to make others comfortable. I trust my abilities, embrace continuous growth, and lead with confidence, knowing that every achievement reflects years of hard work, resilience, and dedication.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering the financial services industry is to invest in yourself first. Earn your degree, pursue internships, seek mentors, and gain hands-on experience that will build both your knowledge and your confidence. Every opportunity is a chance to grow and prepare for the next level of leadership.
Walk into every room knowing you have something valuable to contribute. Don’t allow anyone to diminish your voice or define your potential. Ask questions, continue learning, and never be afraid to take on new challenges. The financial industry needs more women in leadership, and your perspective, ideas, and expertise have the power to create meaningful change. Believe in yourself, lead with integrity, and never stop striving for excellence.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in my field is continuing to break barriers in an industry where women and particularly young women of color remain underrepresented in executive leadership. There have been moments when people have underestimated my experience or questioned my leadership before realizing the role I hold. Rather than allowing those moments to discourage me, I have used them as motivation to consistently lead with excellence, professionalism, and results.
At the same time, I see tremendous opportunity. The financial services industry is evolving, and organizations increasingly recognize the value of diverse perspectives, inclusive leadership, and strong community engagement. I am proud to be part of that progress by helping redefine what leadership looks like and demonstrating that expertise, integrity, and vision not stereotypes are what truly make great leaders. I hope my journey encourages the next generation of women to pursue leadership with confidence and know there is a place for them at the table.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that guide both my professional and personal life are authenticity, integrity, and service. I believe in staying true to who I am and leading with honesty, compassion, and purpose. At the end of each day, I want to know that I acted ethically, treated others with respect, and gave my very best in everything I did.
Those values extend beyond my career. They shape the example I set for my daughter, the trust I build within my community, and the legacy I hope to leave for my family. I believe true success is measured not only by professional accomplishments, but by the positive impact we have on others and the character we demonstrate along the way.
