From the Boardroom to the Community: Why Leadership Isn’t Just About Your Job Title
How Service and Genuine Care Transform Leadership Beyond the Corner Office
From the Boardroom to the Community: Why Leadership Isn't Just About Your Job Title
By Alexis Steen, MBA
When people hear that I'm a Vice President and Branch Manager in banking, they often assume that's where my leadership story begins and ends.
It doesn't.
Leadership isn't something I leave at the office every evening. It's something I carry into every room I enter.
Over the years, I've learned that titles may open doors, but service is what leaves a lasting legacy.
Throughout my career, I've been fortunate to lead high-performing teams, coach employees into promotions, and help individuals and businesses achieve their financial goals. Those experiences have shaped me professionally, but they have also taught me something much bigger.
People don't just need good managers.
They need leaders who genuinely care.
That realization inspired me to create Financial Literacy for All, an organization focused on helping families, young people, and underserved communities gain the knowledge and confidence to build financial security.
Financial Education Isn't Just About Budgets or Credit Scores
- It's about giving someone options.
- It's about helping a young adult believe homeownership is possible.
- It's about showing a small business owner how to prepare for growth.
- It's about breaking cycles that have existed for generations.
Leadership Begins at Home
As a single mother, I've also discovered another important truth.
Every day, my daughter watches how I respond to challenges, how I treat people, how I serve my community, and how I continue pursuing my own education and personal growth. She may not remember every conversation we have, but she'll remember the example I set.
That responsibility motivates me more than any title ever could.
Leadership Isn't About Having All the Answers
- It's about asking better questions.
- It's about listening before speaking.
- It's about creating opportunities for others to succeed.
Whether I'm mentoring future leaders, serving on nonprofit boards, speaking at community events, or helping entrepreneurs understand financial products, my goal is always the same:
Leave people better than I found them.
Real Success Is Measured by Impact
Too often, we measure success by promotions, income, or recognition.
While those accomplishments deserve to be celebrated, they aren't the whole story.
- How many people did you encourage?
- How many doors did you help open?
- How many lives became better because you showed up?
Those are the questions I want my career to answer.
If there's one lesson I've learned throughout my journey, it's this:
Your greatest influence will never come from your title. It will come from your willingness to serve.
And that's the kind of leadership our communities need now more than ever.
