At 19 years old, I became a mother.

While many people my age were deciding what college to attend, exploring new careers, or discovering who they wanted to become, I was learning how to care for another human being. Motherhood arrived earlier than I had planned, bringing with it tremendous responsibility, uncertainty, and love.

My life changed overnight. Suddenly, every decision I made was no longer just about me. I had a child depending on me, watching me, and eventually learning from the example I would set.

At 24, I got married. By the time I was 26, I had welcomed two more children into the world. In just seven years, I had become a mother of three and a wife, building a family while still trying to understand my own identity, dreams, and purpose.

Those years were full.

My days were filled with diapers, school schedules, doctor appointments, family responsibilities, bills, work, exhaustion, celebrations, and countless moments that demanded my full attention. My priorities centered on raising my children and creating a stable, loving home for them. Although education remained important to me, pursuing a college degree often felt like something that belonged to another version of my life - a goal I still carried but one that continually had to wait.

Waiting, however, is not the same as giving up.

My dream of earning a degree never disappeared. It remained quietly in the background through every busy season of motherhood. As the years passed, I began to realize that it was not too late to return to school. My timeline might look different from someone else's, but different did not mean wrong. It did not mean that I had missed my opportunity.

It simply meant that I would reach my goal by taking a different path.

Returning to school as an adult required courage. I was balancing my education with work, marriage, motherhood, and the responsibilities that come with managing a household and supporting a family. There were evenings when I was mentally drained but still had assignments to complete. There were weekends spent studying instead of relaxing and moments when I questioned whether I had taken on too much.

During those moments, I reminded myself why I had started.

I wanted to prove to myself that I was capable of finishing what I had dreamed of accomplishing. I wanted my children to see that growth does not have an expiration date. Most importantly, I wanted them to understand that life does not always unfold according to a perfect plan, but that does not prevent us from building a meaningful and successful future. There is no rulebook for life and no right or wrong way to live; we just have to keep moving forward.

In June 2025, I earned my bachelor's degree.

Walking across that finish line represented much more than completing a college education. It represented every sacrifice, every late night, every obstacle, and every time I chose to continue despite feeling tired or uncertain. That degree belonged not only to the student I had become but also to the 19-year-old mother who once wondered what her future would look like.

Earning my bachelor's degree was not the end of my educational journey. It gave me the confidence to keep going.

Today, I am working toward my master's degree while also pursuing my Certified Professional Public Buyer certification. These goals reflect my commitment to growing both personally and professionally. I want to continue strengthening my knowledge, expanding my abilities, and creating new opportunities for myself and my family.

My journey has taught me that success is not defined by how quickly we reach a milestone or by whether our lives resemble someone else's. Success is continuing to move forward through every season. It is having the courage to begin again, even after years have passed. It is recognizing that the experiences that once seemed like obstacles can become the very things that make us stronger, more focused, and more determined.

I am proud of the young mother I was, the woman I became, and the example I am continuing to set. My children have been able to watch me pursue goals that were placed on hold but never forgotten. I hope my journey teaches them, and anyone else who may be questioning their own timeline, that there is no single correct way to build a successful life.

Sometimes the road is longer than expected. Sometimes our goals must wait while we care for the people we love. Sometimes we must take one class, one assignment, and one step at a time.

But a delayed dream is not a defeated dream.

At 19, I began the journey of raising a family. Decades later, I am still growing, still learning, and still becoming the person I know I am capable of being.

My story is not about being behind.

It is about never giving up.
