About Amy
Amy Antonelli serves as Associate Manager at a data analytics company in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey, where she has worked since 2014. In this role, she manages office and back-end operations, including logistics for travel and conferences, building maintenance, social events, and accounting support, while focusing on people relations across a wide range of clients and colleagues. Prior to her current position, she gained corporate experience in Manhattan at a sales and trading company, an investment firm handling Social Security matters for Kuwait, and a third investment firm, followed by serving as an account executive for an elevator company. She holds a Bachelor's of Science in Alternative Medicine and maintains additional credentials as a yoga instructor who travels internationally to teach and is also a Reiki practitioner. Outside of her professional responsibilities, Amy has volunteered with Women Aware, a domestic violence organization and Y.O.G.A. for Youth (a nonprofit dedicated to equipping young people and families in underserved communities with movement and mindfulness tools). She currently serves as a jazz event coordinator in Metuchen, New Jersey. She attributes her success to her parents, a sense of adventure and curiosity, and trusting in herself.

01What do you attribute your success to?
First and foremost, my parents. Having a strong foundation and support system made a tremendous difference in my life. Beyond that, I've always had a sense of curiosity and adventure, and I believe those qualities have opened doors I might not have otherwise considered. Most importantly, I've learned to trust myself. Sometimes the path you want to take isn't the one others expect or approve of, but having the confidence to follow your instincts and pursue what feels right has been invaluable.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
One lesson I've learned is that life is not a popularity contest, and the workplace is not a democracy. What's important is being kind. You don't always have to be "nice," especially if being nice means sacrificing your own boundaries or values.
I also meditate every morning, and it's a practice that has had a profound impact on both my personal and professional life. It helps me stay grounded, approach challenges with a clear mind, and respond thoughtfully rather than react emotionally. I believe it's especially beneficial in the workplace, where patience, perspective, and self-awareness can make all the difference.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Have patience and stay calm. When you're young or new to a role, it's important to remember that you're still learning, and that's okay. At the same time, be aware that not everyone will always have your best interests at heart, and some people may take advantage of your inexperience. Trust yourself, know your worth, and don't be afraid to stand up for yourself when necessary. Confidence, self-respect, and maintaining your boundaries are just as important as being eager to learn.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
While it has been rare in my experience, there have been times when I've felt I was given less respect because of my gender or because of my role. Those experiences taught me the importance of staying confident, speaking up for myself, and not allowing others to define my value. Over time, I've learned that earning respect starts with respecting yourself and trusting your abilities.

I am incredibly grateful for my career journey. Looking back, one thing is clear: I have always loved to work.
Early Jobs and a Love of Work
From a young age, I couldn't wait to have a job. At 14 years old, I landed my first after-school position in a law office, answering phones and filing paperwork. To me, it was exciting. At 16, I worked as a cashier at ShopRite, balancing school with weekday and weekend shifts. I loved the responsibility, the interaction with people, and the feeling of being productive.
By 17, I was working at a children's play center, rotating between the front desk, snack bar, and hosting birthday parties. It was fast-paced, energetic, and a lot of fun. Around the same time, I began waitressing, a job that taught me invaluable lessons about customer service, multitasking, and work ethic. At 19, I joined the Holiday Inn front desk team and seriously considered a career in hospitality.
Ultimately, I chose a different path. While I enjoyed the excitement of hotels and restaurants, I wanted a more traditional schedule, financial stability, and the opportunity to build a long-term corporate career.
Not the Straight-A Student
My path was not always the one people expected. In school, I was not a straight-A student. In fact, my best friend, who lived next door, earned excellent grades and focused entirely on academics. I earned mostly Bs and Cs, loved being social, and was much more focused on gaining real-world experience.
Ironically, her parents often encouraged her to be more like me because I had developed such a strong work ethic and gained practical experience at a young age.
Before entering the corporate world, I held many different roles, including nanny, library clerk, cosmetologist, salesperson, waitress, and hotel associate. Each experience taught me something valuable and helped shape the professional I would become.
Entering the Corporate World
At 23, I secured my first full-time position in Manhattan with an investment firm. I still remember sitting on the floor of my childhood home with newspaper classifieds spread out around me, circling every opportunity that sounded interesting. My goal was to move to New York City. Someone suggested that I start by working there first, and that advice changed my life.
I was hired through a placement agency, and during the interview process, they told me I was polished and well prepared. I credit my father with instilling those professional skills and expectations in me early on.
I spent five exciting years at that investment firm, enjoying every minute of it. I attended client dinners, after-work events, and had opportunities to meet fascinating and well-known people. It was an incredible learning experience and my introduction to the corporate world.
Those salespeople and traders will always hold a special place in my heart. They taught me about business, relationships, confidence, and how to navigate professional environments with authenticity. Looking back, they played an important role in shaping both my career and the person I would become.
The Value of Adaptability
One lesson I learned early in my career was the value of adaptability. Growing up where I did exposed me to people from many different backgrounds and walks of life, making me comfortable connecting with almost anyone. I came to realize that not everyone has that experience, and it has become one of my greatest strengths, both personally and professionally.
After working at another investment firm, I transitioned to an elevator company as an Account Executive before eventually joining my current organization, a data analytics company, where I have now been for more than 12 years.
What I Am Most Proud Of
What I am most proud of is not any specific title or achievement. It is the fact that, after decades in the workforce, I still genuinely enjoy going to work every day.
For me, enjoying what you do is non-negotiable. Life is too short to spend most of your waking hours unhappy. My career has taught me that there is no single path to success. Sometimes the greatest lessons come not from the classroom but from showing up, working hard, staying curious, and embracing every opportunity that comes your way.
