Her Interview
Ten minutes with Amy
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to the example set by my parents, especially my mother. She began her career working at a fish company and, despite having no formal higher education, worked her way into a microbiology laboratory position through determination, hard work, and perseverance. Watching her continually learn and overcome challenges in her career inspired me to pursue my own career with the same work ethic and commitment to excellence she always displayed.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I have received is to lead by example. I believe the greatest impact comes from combining technical expertise with a willingness to mentor and support others. When you demonstrate excellence in your own work while helping others grow professionally, you create a lasting positive influence that extends far beyond your individual contributions.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would encourage young women entering science and other traditionally male-dominated industries to be courageous, trust their abilities, and have confidence in their convictions. Advocate for yourself, speak up when your expertise deserves to be heard, and never assume someone else will speak on your behalf. Your knowledge, perspective, and contributions are valuable, and confidence grows through experience and persistence.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I think the biggest challenges and opportunities in my field are technical gaps in the workforce and keeping up with the current pace of technological advances. The science industry is currently navigating significant challenges, including data management, regulatory complexity, workforce development, and technology modernization. At the same time, it is experiencing unprecedented opportunities driven by artificial intelligence, digital laboratory transformation, advanced analytics, and the growing ability to leverage scientific data for faster innovation and decision-making. I would encourage anyone choosing a science or engineering degree to make sure to pick an area of focus that is geared toward one or more of these specialized areas.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity is the core value that guides every aspect of my life, both in my work and personal life. In a highly regulated, data-driven scientific environment, maintaining honesty, accountability, and ethical decision-making is essential. I believe in doing the right thing even when no one is watching, ensuring that scientific results are accurate, reliable, and trustworthy. By upholding the highest standards of integrity, I earn the confidence of colleagues, customers, and the communities we serve. Integrity is also the compass that directs my personal life. It influences how I treat others, the choices I make, and the standards I hold myself to. By acting with honesty, accountability, and respect, I strive to be someone others can depend on and a positive example for those around me.
