Her Interview
Ten minutes with Angelica
01What do you attribute your success to?
Perseverance! I have overcome many challenges in both my education and in my career, and my perseverance kept me going. Every challenge has been an opportunity to grow and to become more resilient.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Be extra nice to the Court staff and clerks. They can make your life easier!
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Be absolutely certain that this is the job that you want to do, because you cannot go into this profession for any reason other than love of practicing law. It can be extremely challenging, exhausting, with long hours and significant student loan debt. Also, be open to change, as you may find you love a different practice area than originally planned.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
Artificial intelligence is both a challenge and an opportunity. If used correctly, it is a tool that benefits my practice. However, more pro se (unrepresented) parties are using it in lieu of hiring competent attorneys.
Another challenge is the lack of lawyers in Northwest Indiana. When Valparaiso University School of Law closed, the new lawyers in Northwest Indiana have consistently decreased. Northwest Indiana has become a "legal desert," which is especially difficult for law firms who need associate attorneys.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Treat others with the same respect, honesty, and compassion as you would expect from them.
