Her Story

About Ann

Ann Campanella is a seasoned author, editor, and poet with a writing career spanning over four decades, specializing in memoirs and health-related topics. Her work explores the intersections of family, personal health, and the natural world, offering insight into experiences such as Alzheimer’s, celiac disease, and recovery from injury. Ann’s first memoir, Motherhood: Lost and Found, received recognition as “One of the Best Alzheimer’s Books of All Time” by BookAuthority for two consecutive years, while her second, Celiac Mom, has become a trusted resource for families navigating celiac disease. Her most recent memoir, The Shoulder Season: A Memoir of Fracture and Grace (2025), chronicles her transformation after a serious shoulder injury, providing inspiration to those facing unexpected health challenges.

A graduate of Davidson College with a B.A. in English Literature, Ann began her career in publishing as an editorial assistant and quickly advanced through roles including assistant editor, managing editor, and executive editor for various magazines and newspapers in Atlanta and Houston. She eventually oversaw seven newspapers within a newspaper group, gaining extensive experience in leadership, storytelling, and community engagement. After transitioning to freelance writing and editing for publications like Horseman Magazine, she also taught horseback riding lessons while continuing to cultivate her literary career.

Since 2017, Ann has served as Manager and Director of AlzAuthors, a nonprofit dedicated to amplifying the voices of authors writing about Alzheimer’s and dementia. Through her books, public speaking, and social media advocacy—particularly on Instagram for the gluten-free community—she has become a respected voice in health education and caregiving. Ann and her husband live on Lake Norman in North Carolina, where she continues to write, mentor, and inspire readers navigating complex health and family journeys.

Ten minutes with Ann

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say start wherever you are, and wherever the opportunities are. When I started, I didn't have a definite goal in mind, other than I knew I loved writing, I loved reading, I wanted to work with words, and so if anybody gives you an opportunity to work with words, whether maybe you're in the medical field and you get to write up papers about medical conditions, write that. Any kind of writing that you do will help improve your skills. Just like my writing, because I was writing daily with magazines and newspapers, I had to produce material constantly, and then I had people looking over me and honing it, and so I learned how to do that. I think if anybody is in the position where they can allow themselves to be writing and have somebody editing them and giving them good feedback, that's a great place to start.
