Her Story

About Anna

I've been working as an administrative professional for close to 20 years, starting as a personal assistant and then graduating to a business assistant role. Currently, I'm an office manager at a fertility benefits company, and every single day is very different. I make sure there are enough snacks in the pantry for everybody, check in with the vendors we work with to ensure they have everything they need to make this a place where people want to come and work, and make sure the executives have what they need - especially good food, which I believe is the cornerstone of everybody's livelihood. I also ensure the office is in tip-top shape and that anyone who comes to visit is not only taken care of but also knows who to reach out to if they have questions. I have a deep belief that you want to be respectful and lead with a good impression, so I try to make their visit the best visit that could have ever happened. One of my most notable professional achievements was at Columbia University, where I coordinated internship programs for about 20 students who wanted to be scientists or researchers. Seeing how far they came in such a short amount of time was incredible. I'm passionate about what my company believes in, and everybody here is amazing - they make me want to be a better person, and it's very inspiring.

Ten minutes with Anna

01What do you attribute your success to?

My willingness to learn. I don't think there's anything that I am above learning. It doesn't matter what it is, I want to know how to do it. And I'd love to teach others how to do it, if necessary. I think anyone else who has inspired me, or that I've learned from, they also have that same willingness to just be open to learning something new.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

This was from the grant writer at Columbia University. She was there for over 25 years. Her name was Jamie Rubin, and she was very funny, super serious, but I loved her so much. She had told me your default answer should always be yes. Say yes to everything. No should be something that does not align with who you are as a human being, but even then question that before you say it. Say yes to everything. She said that to me a while ago, and I've never forgot it, and I've been doing that, and I mean, the way things are going on at work now, I can say that she was absolutely right.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Treat others how you'd want to be treated. Treat every single project the way that you would want to see it, the way that you would want to feel it. However you would want to be treated is exactly the way that you should treat every single task that is handed to you. That reflects who you are as a human being. It helps others also become better versions of themselves, and it can also help inspire them to be themselves, whatever that means.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I think when it comes to opportunities, there are a vast number of opportunities, and it kind of goes hand-in-hand with what the challenges are as well. There is a certain aspect of technology and AI that can make things easier, but also with making things easier, it can also make them a little scary. Just because there are things that you no longer need an admin for, right? Like scheduling meetings sometimes, or just kind of making things automatic. But at the same time, it's also been incredibly helpful. There are things I don't have to think about. There are things that I could just make them a little automatic, and I won't have to remember to do this. So, I think that that would be an opportunity and a challenge all at once. And just there is a learning curve to these large language models and AI companies, or AI technologies. But I think that's something that I've been working on for sometime, and I hope to master it, so that it can be helpful to everyone.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I have to be passionate about what the company, the corporation, whatever it is, I have to be passionate about what they believe in. They have to want people to grow around them - anyone who reports to them, they want to have to see them grow. So I guess maybe one of the values is just truly caring about what they're doing. And even for myself now, I believe in what my company is doing. And so that is why I'm here, and that's why I've been here for a very short amount of time, but it almost feels like I want to be here for the rest of my life. Everybody here is amazing. They make me want to be a better person. And it's just very inspiring.
