I'm an author who has been writing full-time since 2015. My first book, Hidden, The Anatomy of Healing, is a spiritual, emotional, and mental healing book that came from a dark place I was in due to marital stuff and childhood experiences. God gave me a revelation that if I stayed in that place, writing would be like writing braille - those who need to understand it wouldn't. So I wrote it down to get out of that place. The book is about how staying where you are mentally and physically can lead to mental and emotional death, and it's about changing your mind to help change your position in life so you can grow out of dark and hidden places and come to the light. My second book, Exceptional, The Gentle Giant, is a memoir about my son who was diagnosed with autism at age 2. He went through seizures and actually died for a few seconds - they had to resuscitate him. He graduated from Berkeley High School in South Carolina in 2023 and is currently in his junior year at Clemson University in the LIFE program, which teaches life skills to young adults with disabilities. He's been accepted into both the Kappa Alpha and Omega fraternities. I'm currently working on my third book called The Seed, which goes deeper than the first book - it's about uprooting things that were planted in our minds and ears when we were younger that still try to live out in our adult life. I'm interviewing agriculturists and farmers to understand how important it is to put a seed in the right environment to grow properly. Before writing full-time, I was in the military for 12 years and deployed twice to Iraq. I separated in 2011 because I couldn't deploy and take care of my son. After that, I worked with the Census Bureau and was a substitute teacher for a while. I took leadership classes in the military, became a certified massage therapist (though not licensed because I didn't take the test), and got certification in human services, though I didn't finish my bachelor's degree because I ran out of funds.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I would say my pastor from Italy when I was stationed there, Pastor Michaela Cade. She's my inspiration, and I still glean off of her today when I can. She was a pastor at the chapel on base, and her husband was in the military. She really made a big impression on me throughout this incredible journey I've been on.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would have to say there will be dry spots, and there will be spots that are full. Take the opportunity of both. Because those dry spots are also opportunities for you to look outside yourself to see what needs to be in the book, needs to be written. A lot of times we get distracted by the outside noise, and thinking those dry spots are empty, but they are also full. And so, when you have the opportunity with those full spots, remember the dry spots and write.
