Her Story

About Antonia

I had a 30-year career as a CPA in public and private accounting before finding my passion in higher education. I started in public accounting in the 1980s at Price WaterhouseCoopers (which at the time was Coopers and Lybrand) when women were treated differently in the workplace. I learned through a lot of different mentors as I worked my way up, and I went through tremendous management training that taught me how to mentor people on my team, as well as diplomacy and negotiation and all those key skills that are so important for succeeding in business. My key skill set when I was in public and private accounting was mentoring individuals and communicating with clients and with management, board of trustees, and so forth. I took that and continued in higher ed. After working in the Office of General Counsel, I had a mentor who was the Vice President, General Counsel. He was very good in terms of identifying my key strengths and really pushed me to challenge myself, and promoted me to Assistant Vice President at a university. After 5 years, I was asked to teach a course while somebody was on maternity leave, and after teaching that course, the light bulb went off, and I realized this is what I really want to do with teaching. I've been in a teaching capacity since 2015, but in higher ed administration since 2008. Now I'm the chair of an accounting department, where I handle everything from curriculum management to enrollment and program development, but most importantly, I'm advising and guiding my students both inside and outside the classroom academically, career-wise, and personally. I find myself to be almost like a life coach.

Ten minutes with Antonia

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would say I inherited my father's work ethic. I think a strong work ethic, and always expecting 100% of yourself and working with others to bring out the best in their 100%, is really something that I inherited from him. He was a really strong leader and really guided me throughout my life, and made a big impact on me professionally more than he ever realized.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Listen.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I always refer to a phrase by Eleanor Roosevelt: don't let anyone make you feel inferior without your permission. I find that sometimes I have to remind myself when I walk into a room and I can sense that I haven't yet won the trust of the people in the room, that it's me who decides whether or not I'm going to earn their respect, and it's actually earning it, not expecting it.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

In my current industry, higher education, I think one of the challenges is gaining the respect of academics who may not appreciate the value of professional experience. I'm seen as a fairly new member of academia, where when I left my career to transition into a role of higher ed, I was at my peak. I had several C-suite positions, so it was definitely a change in how I had to earn respect and work my way up again.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I would say transparency, integrity, and loyalty.
