Ashley Schwien serves as Operations Manager at Clairco Tool Company, a small tooling distributor in the manufacturing sector located in Davenport, Iowa. She did not initially plan a career in manufacturing but discovered transferable skills in leadership, process improvement, and building strong teams through diverse experiences. Her career began with management roles in the restaurant industry, followed by positions as a salon manager and district manager in cosmetology. An opportunity to help a friend build a startup business introduced her to white label contract manufacturing, which paved the way to her current position overseeing operations. Schwien earned an associate's degree from Scott Community College in 2023 after the birth of her last daughter. She values the collaborative environment at her small company, where the team is achieving significant results despite its size.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to a strong work ethic, a willingness to continuously learn, and a commitment to building positive relationships. I believe that listening, adapting, and staying focused on solutions allows me to overcome challenges and create long-term results for both my team and the organization.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've received is to take ownership of what you can control and remember that your reputation is built on what you consistently do, not what you occasionally do. That advice has shaped my approach to leadership by emphasizing accountability, reliability, and a proactive mindset. I believe success comes from following through on commitments, continuously improving, and being someone others can depend on when challenges arise.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering this industry is to be confident, stay curious, and never underestimate the value of hard work. Don't be afraid to ask questions or take on responsibilities that push you outside your comfort zone. Your knowledge, work ethic, and integrity will ultimately speak louder than any barriers you may encounter.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I see one of the greatest opportunities in our industry as the ability to modernize operations through technology and data-driven decision-making. ERP systems, automation, and improved processes can significantly increase efficiency and enhance the customer experience. The challenge is managing that change effectively while continuing to meet day-to-day business demands.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity, accountability, respect, and continuous improvement are values I strive to live by every day. These principles not only drive success in the workplace but also help build meaningful relationships and a strong foundation for personal growth. I believe how you treat people and follow through on your commitments says a great deal about who you are, both professionally and personally.

It's found in the people who make success possible every day.
Throughout my career, I've had the privilege of working in operations and leadership roles where performance, efficiency, and results are critical. I've learned that while processes can improve productivity and technology can enhance capabilities, neither can fully replace the value of a motivated team, strong leadership, and a culture built on trust and accountability. Early in my career, I believed leadership meant having all the answers. Experience quickly taught me otherwise. Effective leadership is less about being the smartest person in the room and more about creating an environment where others can succeed. The strongest leaders are those who listen, empower, and provide their teams with the tools and confidence needed to solve problems and make decisions.
I often encourage young women entering the workforce to have confidence in their abilities, ask questions, and never underestimate the value of their perspectives. Manufacturing needs diverse voices, fresh ideas, and leaders who are willing to challenge conventional thinking. Some of the most impactful improvements I've witnessed have come from individuals who simply felt empowered to speak up and offer a different viewpoint.
Another lesson I've learned is that success is rarely achieved alone. Every accomplishment I am proud of is connected to a team effort. Behind every operational improvement, customer success story, and business milestone are people working together toward a common goal. Strong teams are built through communication, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to excellence.
As leaders, we also have a responsibility to invest in those around us. Mentorship, coaching, and professional development are not optional activities; they are essential parts of building sustainable organizations. The greatest legacy any leader can leave is not a process improvement or a financial result. It is developing people who continue to grow, succeed, and create a positive impact long after we are gone.
Looking ahead, I am optimistic about the future of manufacturing. The industry continues to offer incredible opportunities for innovation, growth, and meaningful careers. Organizations that embrace change while remaining committed to their people will be best positioned for long-term success.
