About Ayanna
Ayanna Johnson is an accomplished education leader, edupreneur, and advocate for educational equity with more than 38 years of experience dedicated to transforming the lives of students, educators, and communities. Her journey in education began unexpectedly after receiving a full scholarship to Harvard University, where she discovered her passion for serving students through her involvement with the Phillips Brooks House Association in Harvard Yard. What started as a college tutoring opportunity evolved into a lifelong commitment to education, leadership, and creating opportunities for young people to achieve their full potential. She later founded a daycare program as an Echoing Green Fellow, served as a daycare director, and spent nine years as a KinderCare Center Director, earning recognition for her leadership excellence and commitment to high-quality education.
Throughout her career, Ayanna has held a variety of impactful roles, including classroom teacher, math specialist, instructional coach, assistant principal, principal, and leadership coach. She currently serves as Principal of Vision Academy Charter School of Excellence, where she leads efforts to cultivate a supportive and academically focused environment that prepares students to become responsible, confident, and articulate leaders. Her expertise includes instructional leadership, curriculum development, school turnaround strategies, educator coaching, and building strong school cultures. She is passionate about supporting educators and school leaders in implementing strategic plans, improving instructional practices, and creating equitable educational opportunities for all students.
Ayanna earned a B.A. in Afro-American Studies from Harvard University, graduating Magna Cum Laude, and an M.Ed. in Multicultural Education from Eastern University. She has also completed coursework toward superintendent certification and continues to serve as President of the Phillips Brooks House Association Alumni, supporting the next generation of leaders engaged in community service. Her accomplishments include receiving the 2023 Outstanding Alumni Award from the Phillips Brooks House Association, as well as earlier recognition as Center Director of the Year and Teacher of the Year. Beyond her professional work, Ayanna enjoys playing the violin and remains deeply committed to faith, service, lifelong learning, and investing in the growth and success of others.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to purpose, perseverance, and a lifelong commitment to helping others reach their full potential. When I arrived at Harvard University, I initially envisioned a career in law or economics, but an opportunity to tutor students through the Phillips Brooks House Association in Dorchester transformed the direction of my life. Through that experience, I discovered my passion for education and my calling to create opportunities for children and communities. Over the past 38 years, I have dedicated my career to educational leadership, serving in roles including tutor, Echoing Green Fellow and daycare founder, daycare director, KinderCare Center Director, classroom teacher, math specialist, instructional coach, assistant principal, principal, and leadership coach. Each role has strengthened my belief that meaningful change begins with strong leadership, effective systems, and a commitment to student success. Today, I focus on coaching educators and school leaders, particularly in turnaround environments, helping them implement strategic plans, strengthen school culture, and improve outcomes for students. I am deeply committed to educational equity and believe every child deserves access to an excellent education and the opportunity to thrive. Receiving the 2023 Outstanding Alumni Award from the Phillips Brooks House Association was a meaningful recognition of the work I have dedicated my life to, bringing my journey full circle. After nearly four decades in education, I remain inspired by the opportunity to empower students, support educators, and help build schools where every learner can succeed.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I have received has come from the remarkable leaders and mentors who have shaped my journey. Donna Grakowski, Dr. Sutton, and leadership expert John Maxwell have each influenced the way I approach leadership by reinforcing the importance of leading with integrity, maintaining a clear vision, and investing in the growth and development of others. Their guidance has reminded me that true leadership is not only about achieving results but also about empowering people, building strong relationships, and creating opportunities for others to succeed.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering education is to always remain connected to their purpose and keep students at the center of everything they do. The work can be challenging, with evolving policies, complex challenges, and many competing demands, but staying focused on the mission of education will provide clarity and direction. Lead with urgency, advocate for students, and remain committed to creating equitable opportunities for every learner. The greatest impact comes from leaders who not only understand the importance of academic success but also recognize the responsibility to inspire, empower, and create pathways for all students to thrive.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
The biggest challenges and opportunities in education today center around improving student outcomes, strengthening leadership, and ensuring equitable access to high-quality learning experiences for every student. There is an urgent need to address declining educational outcomes by investing in stronger instructional leadership and supporting schools that are working to overcome significant challenges. I see a tremendous opportunity in leadership coaching and developing the expertise of educators and school leaders who are committed to transforming struggling schools. By expanding this work beyond charter schools and partnering with public school districts, we can reach more educators, strengthen school communities, and create sustainable improvements that positively impact students regardless of their background or location.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are lifelong learning, resilience, faith, service, and a commitment to positively impacting others. I believe growth is a continuous journey, and I have embraced opportunities to continue developing as a leader, even during some of life’s most challenging moments. While balancing the responsibility of caring for my father during his battle with dementia, I completed the coursework required for my superintendent letter of eligibility, an experience that strengthened my resilience and reinforced my belief that meaningful growth often comes through adversity. My faith remains the foundation of who I am and guides how I lead, serve, and support others. Beyond my professional work, I stay actively involved in my church through children’s ministry and Bible study, where I find fulfillment in serving others and investing in the next generation. These values shape my approach to leadership and inspire me to create opportunities for growth, learning, and success for those around me.
