Be Kind: The Leadership Lesson That Transcends Titles

My grandmother never held a corporate title, but she gave me one of the most consequential leadership lessons of my career: be kind.

She once told me there was immense room to grow as a kind leader because genuine kindness was still too rare. At the time, I heard the simplicity of her words. Only later, after years of working across cultures, leading global teams, and guiding complex transformation, did I understand their depth.

My mother and grandmother did not work in corporate environments, yet they recognized leadership in me before I recognized it in myself. Long before I learned the language of strategy, transformation, operating models, or organizational performance, they taught me to see the human being in front of me. They taught me that strength does not require hardness and that influence carries responsibility.

My immigrant journey from Dubai and my path as one of the first women in my family to pursue electrical engineering taught me early to adapt, work hard, and enter rooms where I did not always see myself represented. Those experiences built resilience. They also taught me something equally important: achievement may open a door, but the way we treat people determines what becomes possible once we enter.

Over time, I have come to define my grandmother's wisdom this way: kindness is not the absence of rigor. It is rigor practiced without losing sight of the human being.

Kindness Is Not the Same as Niceness

Niceness often protects comfort. Kindness protects dignity while serving the truth.

A nice leader may postpone difficult feedback because the conversation feels uncomfortable. A kind leader is willing to have that conversation because another person's growth, the team's trust, and the work itself deserve honesty.

Kindness is not saying yes to every request, avoiding conflict, or making every decision by consensus. It is telling the truth with care, setting boundaries without contempt, and making hard decisions without losing sight of the people affected.

It asks a different question—not How do I avoid discomfort? but How do I create the conditions for honesty, growth, and respect?

High standards and humanity are not opposites. Kindness does not lower the bar. It changes how we help people reach it.

Clarity Is an Act of Care

In complex organizations, some ambiguity is unavoidable. Unmanaged ambiguity, however, is costly. People spend valuable energy interpreting shifting priorities, guessing who owns a decision, or wondering whether their work still matters.

I have learned that one of the kindest things a leader can offer is clarity: what matters now, what success looks like, who owns what, what has changed, and why.

Leaders sometimes soften or delay a message because they hope to spare people discomfort. Yet prolonged uncertainty can be harder than a difficult truth. People can navigate change more effectively when they understand the purpose, the constraints, and the path forward.

Clarity does not require pretending we know everything. Sometimes, the most trustworthy thing a leader can say is:

Here is what we know. Here is what we do not yet know. And here is when we will return with an answer.

That kind of honesty creates steadiness. It gives people something solid to work from, even while the environment continues to change.

Clarity is also an expression of respect. It tells people that their time, contributions, and ability to make informed decisions matter.

Accountability Without Humiliation

Kindness becomes credible when it includes accountability.

Without accountability, kindness can become permissiveness. Without kindness, accountability can become fear. Neither creates the conditions for sustained excellence.

When expectations are missed, the goal should not be to shame someone. It should be to create understanding, ownership, and a path forward. I try to begin with questions: Was the expectation clear? What got in the way? What was the impact? What support is needed? What must change?

These questions do not excuse a performance gap. They help reveal whether the solution involves skill, capacity, alignment, decision-making, or behavior. They allow us to address the real issue rather than reacting only to the visible outcome.

The most effective accountability leaves a person clear about what must change while still believing that change is possible. People remember whether a leader corrected them in a way that diminished them or developed them.

This does not mean every situation will have a comfortable outcome. Sometimes a role, responsibility, or relationship must change. Kindness is not a promise that every outcome will feel good. It is a commitment to honesty, fairness, and dignity throughout the process.

We can hold people to a high standard without asking them to surrender their humanity in order to meet it.

The Human Side of Transformation

Transformation is often described through strategies, technologies, road maps, operating models, and metrics. People experience it more personally:

Will my role change? Will I still belong? Can I learn what is being asked of me? Does my experience still matter?

Whether an organization is introducing a new technology, redesigning a process, or changing how global teams work together, people are not an implementation detail. They are participants in shaping the future.

Human-centered transformation does not mean every suggestion is adopted or every decision is made by consensus. It means leaders listen seriously, explain choices, acknowledge trade-offs, invite the right voices early, and make decisions with both outcomes and human impact in view.

Kindness during transformation is practical. It means giving context before asking for commitment. It means allowing questions without immediately labeling them resistance. It means naming not only what will be gained but also what people may need to release.

Change requires learning and unlearning. Sometimes, it also carries a genuine sense of loss. A familiar role, process, identity, or source of expertise may be changing. Acknowledging that reality does not slow transformation down. It creates the trust required for people to move through it.

Technology can accelerate transformation. Trust determines whether it takes root.

As leaders, we can move with urgency without becoming careless with people. In fact, the more complex the change, the more deliberately we must create clarity, belonging, and room for honest dialogue.

The Responsibility to Help Others Rise

I have been blessed with mentors and sponsors who challenged me, advocated for me, and helped me see possibilities I could not always see for myself.

Their kindness was not passive. It took the form of honest feedback, a recommendation, a seat at the table, or a door opened at the right moment.

Their example changed how I understand success. Leadership is not an individual achievement. It is also what becomes possible for others because we were willing to notice their potential and use our influence responsibly.

My work as an integral coach, along with the leadership and human-development conversations I cultivate through Ayesha's Lens, has reinforced this belief. People do not always need someone else to prescribe who they should become. Often, they need space to think, questions that help them see more clearly, truth offered with care, and someone who believes they are capable of taking the next step.

This invites every leader to ask:

• Who is becoming more confident, capable, and visible because I am here?
• Whose potential am I noticing before they can fully name it?
• Where can I use my influence to widen the path?

Helping another person rise does not diminish our own light. It is one of the clearest expressions of leadership.

My faith reminds me that influence is an amanah—a trust and a responsibility. Titles may describe the scope of our responsibility, but they do not define the worth of our leadership. That is revealed in how we use our authority, particularly when there is no recognition or reward attached.

Today, I measure success differently than I once did. Outcomes matter. Excellence matters. But so do the people, systems, and possibilities we leave behind.

I want the work to be stronger because I was there. I also want people to feel clearer, braver, and more able to lead because of how we worked together.

My grandmother's advice has become more relevant with every season: be kind. Not as a substitute for courage, clarity, or accountability, but as the force that gives them humanity.

The measure of leadership is not how much authority we accumulate, but how thoughtfully we use it to help others rise.
