About Barbie

Barbie Abel is an experienced insurance professional with 15 years in the field. She currently serves as Commercial Lines Training and Audit Leader, where she runs training programs for new hires with prior experience as well as those new to the industry. In this capacity she teaches insurance, career pathing, and job skills simultaneously while also developing additional programs to support career growth and personal development. Abel holds the CIC, or Certified Insurance Counselor, national designation along with licensing in all lines of business. She did not attend college. Prior to entering insurance she taught music for 10 years, starting while in high school and building her own private studio, and she also worked on her father's construction crew in Iowa. She attributes her success to a combination of being a self-described nerd who enjoys reading insurance policies in depth and the guidance of influential mentors in each of her previous roles. Abel values genuine connections with people and helping others reach their goals, a passion that traces back to her early teaching experiences.

Ten minutes with Barbie

01What do you attribute your success to?

I would say a combination of the fact that I am a nerd, and I enjoy reading insurance policies, and so I just dig in really hard to learn as much as I can, but if I look back to the other roles I've had in the past, I have had some extremely influential people in every job that I have had that has helped guide me and train me and helped me learn the industry. So I definitely have people that have just circled around me and helped me grow into what I'm able to do now.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I'm gonna tell you every what I tell every single person that I interview, because I do a lot of interviews here. I get asked all the time, what's your advice? And I always tell people, make sure that you are curious. Always be asking questions and thinking deep before you ask those questions. And the second thing I tell people is leave your pride at the door. And I think that is so important because sometimes it is so uncomfortable not knowing what you're doing. But accept the fact that you don't know everything yet. And admitting and acknowledging that you don't know, but then promising that you will find out and following through on that promise is huge when dealing with people, building integrity, building trust. So I was gonna say, be curious, but also know that you're not going to know everything, and it's okay, because we will get you there.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

So, in the industry, I would say, for insurance as a whole, everyone who has insurance, which is everyone on this planet almost, they're feeling the impacts of increased rates. And having those conversations, and part of my job is to help train people on how you have gracious conversations with people, and explain some of the things that are happening in the industry that affect the rates, and I would say that is one tough thing, is just helping other people, helping the consumer try to see what's going on, but then helping them find a solution that still works for them, even though there are things going on in the industry that we can't change. I would say in the industry, that's one big thing, is just different things happen in the world that cause this industry to kind of increase in that way. And it counts as conversations, but still having empathy and compassion for the person you have on the phone, because it directly impacts their life.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I would say, people. I have always loved working with people and getting to help them, and that, again, I think, came back to my childhood and my high school years of starting to teach, and just the connections you make with people and a genuine care for them. You know, in your personal life, I just enjoy people. I love spending time with people and getting to know them, but in my professional life. I genuinely love to get to know people and what they want, and then help them get there, so it's really that person connection that I do, I do love.
