Her Story

About Berenice

I'm building a technology platform for occupational health in high-stress, high-risk environments.

The idea came from my experience as a professional offshore sailor. During long ocean races, I realized how little we know about human physiology and decision-making under prolonged exposure to fatigue, stress, sleep deprivation, and harsh environmental conditions.

To better understand the problem, I spoke with firefighters, military personnel, miners, oil and gas workers, commercial fishermen, surgeons, ICU staff, and other professionals who regularly push their bodies and minds to the limit. These individuals are, in many ways, elite performers, yet they rarely have access to the same monitoring and decision-support tools used in high-performance sports.

I founded Hatch Systems to bridge that gap. We leverage technologies and insights from elite sports and adapt them for occupational settings, providing workers and team leaders with real-time information on health status, physiological strain, and environmental risks. Our goal is to improve decision-making, reduce injuries, and help teams operate more safely and effectively.

Over the past year, we have developed a fully functional prototype. Seven systems are currently deployed on sailboats racing to the Arctic and across the Atlantic, which serves as our initial market and real-world testing environment. Our next steps include pilot deployments with firefighters, military operators, and pilots. We are also exploring opportunities to expand beyond sailing while remaining connected to high-performance sports.

Ten minutes with Berenice

01What do you attribute your success to?

I've always been driven by the desire to become a better version of myself. I love learning, improving, and pushing beyond my comfort zone, whether that's through sports, science, or entrepreneurship. I think that's where growth happens: not only professionally, but personally as well. What motivates me most is building something that has a meaningful impact. Through Hatch, I hope to help workers and athletes in high-risk environments stay healthier and safer, ultimately reducing injuries and saving lives. That's a mission that feels deeply worthwhile to me.

My career has often been shaped by opportunities. I had the chance to pursue a PhD, then a postdoc, and later a semi-professional sailing career. Starting a company was also somewhat opportunistic. While sailing offshore, I realized there was a major gap in how we monitor and support human performance in extreme environments. The more I spoke with firefighters, military personnel, healthcare workers, and others, the more I realized this wasn't just a sailing problem. It was a much larger societal challenge. I enjoy building new things, tackling difficult problems, and learning along the way. That's what keeps me going.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Dream big and never give up.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Be curious, keep learning, and don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone - that's how you grow! And most importantly, pursue work that genuinely excites you. Building a career is hard, and passion is often what helps you persevere through setbacks and uncertainties.
