Her Interview

Ten minutes with Bonnie

01What do you attribute your success to?

I'm good at what I do, and I don't give up, and I go shopping, and I do what I say I'm going to do. I literally do what I say I'm going to do. If I'm going to call you back in 2 hours, I'll call you back in 2 hours. And people like me because I'm blunt. I tell it like it is, I don't dance, I don't try to sell you anything. I'm honest with people because I don't want to have to remember what I said yesterday. There's a lot of selling going on out there versus being a good advisor. I tell people how it is, and I'm straightforward with it. I fix things for clients when I see policies that were done wrong by other agents. I'm a survivor. Literally, if I were to define myself in 3 words, I would say I'm a survivor. I don't give up, because I can't give up. I'm not allowed. I won't let myself fail.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Don't give up. Just keep on truckin'. Just keep doing the same thing that you've been doing. And build referrals, build relationships, so that you can help each other's businesses grow. I think that's really important. It's not just to find a customer, it's actually to build relationships.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Not many people want to be an insurance agent because it's commission only, but I make a lot of money. It may take you time to get started, but good things come to those who wait, is one of my favorite sayings. Don't give up, you know, just keep on rockin'. Don't just become a grocery clerk or work at the mall. Take the time to learn. You need to take the time to learn. And that's one good thing about being an insurance agent, is you never, ever, ever stop learning. Ever. Because things keep changing. If you like change, insurance agency is good.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Getting people to realize that they don't need to stick with the same insurance company. Getting people to understand that they shouldn't ignore their insurance policy, you know, it should be reviewed every couple of years. Review it as your business grows. Because a lot of people don't start off with insuring their property. So, they've been in business for 5 years, then they have a fire, well, they have no coverage because they never called me back. That's one of my biggest pet peeves. And some people don't think they need workers' compensation when they have independent contractors, that's a wrong thought. Some people don't insure their diamonds, you know, that they have if they lose it. There's a lot of selling going on out there versus being a good advisor.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Honesty. Honesty is the most important thing to me. Be intuitive of your surroundings. Don't just believe everything you hear. Don't believe anything, everybody's insurance policy is not the same. Everybody's thoughts are not the same. Ask questions. Don't just hear something and believe it. Investigate it. Take the time to learn. Be curious and keep learning, because you never stop learning. Things keep changing.
