About Brittany

Brittany Lutz is a Development Chemist specializing in chemical product development, environmental chemistry, and formulation innovation. She currently serves at Johnson Controls, where she develops next-generation fire suppression foam technologies designed to eliminate PFAS and other non-compliant materials while meeting rigorous industry certifications. Her work focuses on identifying innovative materials, conducting experimental research, and collaborating with industry partners to develop sustainable, high-performance chemical solutions.

Prior to joining Johnson Controls, Brittany built extensive experience in supplement and nutraceutical product development as a Senior Development Scientist at OrthoMolecular Products, where she collaborated closely with marketing and research teams to formulate effective healthcare products. She also spent many years in microbiology and laboratory science, developing expertise in analytical testing, environmental chemistry, and scientific research. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry with a major in Spanish from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and later completed a Master of Science in Environmental Engineering Technology/Environmental Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh, graduating with Dean's List honors.

Beyond her professional responsibilities, Brittany is committed to mentoring the next generation of scientists through her company's STEM outreach program, where she supports local high school students by leading experiments, providing career guidance, and assisting with résumé development. She is an active member of the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) and believes success is built through perseverance, lifelong learning, kindness, and respect. Guided by a passion for innovation and service, she remains dedicated to advancing sustainable chemistry while creating a positive impact for both industry and society.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to hard work, determination, and the willingness to never give up. I continually push myself forward while treating others with kindness and respect. I believe in lifelong learning through continuing education and strive to make a meaningful difference in my field every day. These values have helped me grow professionally while contributing to innovations that benefit both individuals and businesses.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have received is to earn the respect and trust of others through my actions, bring positivity wherever I go, and advocate for people who need support. Building strong relationships and maintaining integrity have been essential throughout my career.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I encourage young women to be confident in who they are and never be afraid to share their ideas. Your perspective matters, and your voice deserves to be heard. Lead by example, remain authentic, and trust that your unique contributions can positively influence both your team and the industry.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the greatest opportunities in my field is continuing research in chemistry to develop innovative, sustainable solutions that make a meaningful difference for both individuals and businesses. Advancing safer technologies while solving complex scientific challenges continues to be an exciting and rewarding focus of my work.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that guide me most are being a good listener, helping others whenever possible, remaining open to learning new things, embracing challenges, and viewing every opportunity as a chance to grow both personally and professionally.
