Her Story

About Cameron

I just finished my digital marketing degree at App State about two weeks ago, after transferring in as a junior from community college. Over the past two years, I've been actively building my digital portfolio through hands-on experience. I did internships with Southern C&G LLC, a sustainable gas fueling company that works on compressors as a sustainable gas alternative. Now I'm working as a freelance digital marketing consultant for their partner company, Southern Star Custom Fabrications, which is a steel fabrication, welding, and industrial maintenance company. For both of these companies, I'm completely redoing and revamping their websites, adding Google Analytics services, creating new logos, writing photo descriptions, and managing their social media presence. Beyond my client work, I've been self-employed on Depop for almost three years, where I've successfully made about 430 sales and earned 158 five-star reviews. This platform serves as my creative outlet where I can make promotional posts on Instagram, highlight positive reviews, and most importantly, tie into my passion for sustainability by combating fast fashion and overconsumption. I recently participated in an international entrepreneurship business class through App State where I traveled to Belgium and worked with a team of American and Belgian students to develop a complete business plan for a sports equipment rental locker system that promotes sustainability and community in both markets. My biggest focus is working with sustainable companies, and I'm keeping my options open while exploring whether to continue as an independent entrepreneur or pursue a more traditional corporate digital marketing role, as long as it aligns with my values around sustainability.

Ten minutes with Cameron

01What do you attribute your success to?

It's hard for me to pinpoint exactly because this is genuinely how I've been for as long as I can remember. I just love to learn, and it motivates me so much when I achieve things. The more I can achieve, the better I feel, so why stop? Why not go that extra mile, do the extra work, put in the extra time so that it's how I want it to be and the product I want it to be? If you put in the time, you're going to get the results you want. Being a twin might have contributed to it too because I've always been a little bit competitive. I want to do really good, I want to be the best, I want to achieve. But my parents have always encouraged me since I was young. They said do whatever you want to do, we will support you, do what you love. They never told me I have to do this or go into this or go to college. It was never pressure. A lot of kids feel pressure to be a certain way or follow a certain path, but my parents were just like, it's up to you. I was able to discern that I want this for myself because they are willing to support me, and I know I can do it because they put that faith in me from a young age. They built me up as much as they could and said we're on your side.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

The main thing that would have helped me to hear, and that helped me the most to remind myself, is always, always follow what makes you passionate. Don't go into something that you're not passionate about. If you find yourself looking for that purpose or passion, be very discerning and clear, and take the time to think about what you care about. Try to, as much as you can, put that into what you do, because it makes the entire difference on how you feel about what you're working on, how you feel about the things you're doing, and genuinely the confidence you have in yourself to be a good businesswoman or good at whatever you do. Make sure you have the passion behind it first. Make sure it's something you really, really want to do. If it's helping people, that's great, but it doesn't have to be that. Just make sure it's something that you feel like could make a difference and it's something that you want to change in the world. Also, when you're in those male-prevalent fields, it can be intimidating, but don't let it be, because a lot of the times you're the most put together and organized one in the room. That's how I feel.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I know there's jobs in digital marketing, but at the same time, AI is kind of something I want to see what's happening with before I jump into a traditional corporate role. I want to see where the market's going with AI. I also want to find a job that keys into sustainability in some aspect. If I don't find that, I just don't feel like I'm going to have the passion for it that I need to have, because it's a non-negotiable for me. I want to work for a sustainable company that honors that and is working towards fueling sustainability instead of overconsumption.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Sustainability is one of my biggest focuses, both within my career and in the world, because of fast fashion and overconsumption. That's one of my biggest concerns. When I do my Depop business, I'm solving the sustainability issue, but I'm also making customers feel seen, making them feel like their purchase is worth it, and that they're getting an extra little freebie. I want to help them feel extra good. Business is about wanting to help solve a problem for people. I find yoga so peaceful and relaxing and grounding because it takes you back into that appreciation and gratitude for just being present, being in the moment, being here, being healthy, happy, and all the things that are going for you and what you have to look forward to in the future. I also love always expanding my knowledge.
